Miami Marlins’ Gaby Sanchez demoted to minors

Chris Coghlan… I feel like I’ve heard that name before… can’t quite place it.

Gaby Sanchez was an All-Star last year. He’s a minor-leaguer now.

The Marlins demoted the slumping first baseman to Triple A New Orleans on Saturday after an 0-for-3 day at the plate lowered his average to .197…

The Marlins are expected to call up outfielder Chris Coghlan from New Orleans.

[GM Michael] Hill said any one of three players — Logan Morrison, Greg Dobbs and Austin Kearns — could take over at first base.

Morrison was a first baseman in the minors and, with a sore knee, is a strong candidate to change positions.

The Marlins really should have sold high on Sanchez over the offseason, moved Morrison to first base, and gotten a real left fielder.

I'm surprised he and Lind would head down before Davis, but the Mets also have less to play for than the Marlins or Jays.

How has it been shown so far that we have less to play for than the Marlins, exactly?

There sure have been a lot of these this season. Former All-Star Evan Meek also got sent down a couple weeks ago.

Chalk it up to the soft bigotry of low expectations

Naturally, it helps that 100 guys make the All-Star team ;-)

I don't know that AAA would help Ike. I think it's the Valley Fever and the ankle which are holding him back, and I don't see how facing weaker pitching would help with either of those things. Dude needs a DL stint to get his strength back. I think Ike heading to AAA might help the Mets, though.

I could kind of buy it, given that a strong season could really help the Marlins build their new brand. But the Mets could use some brand resuscitation themselves, and since the Marlins and Mets are currently in a three way tie with the Giants for the second wild card spot, I'd say they're pretty even.

Jair Jurrjens was a deserving 2011 All-Star who is in AAA for the forseeable.

It's a deep system when you can send down a reigning All-Star and bring up a former RoY! :-)

I'm going to assume this is the first time that's ever happened.

The Orioles are in first place by two games. Does that mean they're playing for more than the Yankees, who are 5.5 games back?
