Mickey Callaway on Mets’ pitching issues: ‘It’s not concerning’

The Mets’ 5.57 team ERA is the third-worst in the majors, better than only the Orioles and Red Sox. But manager Mickey Callaway isn’t ready to sound the alarm.

“It’s not concerning,” Callaway said at Citi Field before Monday night’s game against the Phillies, noting that the sample size is far too small for the team to be worried.

Is Callaway right to not be alarmed? Maybe…

Famous last words….

I dunno, I suspect he's right about this. We're 22 games into the regular season, and a week ago I was seeing articles asking what's wrong with Nolan Arenado. Still firmly enough in SSS territory, but I'm always an optimist until May.

Other SSS Met weirdness:
Amed Rosario is sort of remarkably consistent...
.262 .303 .381 (2019)
.256 .295 .381 (2018)
.248 .271 .394 (2017)

Syndergaard and deGrom (health permitting) will be better and some of the ERA is dragged up by guys like Vargas and Avilan who should be released. Wheeler needs to be better and I'm worried that Familia sucks now (after the very large 10 inning sample).

Familia has gone through bad strecthes before--he looked good last night, fwiw. Wheeler's definitely cause for concern--he finally put it together last year, but his hold on the new level of performance was always going to be tenuous, and he could easily revert to "can't-make-it-more-than-5-innings-because-he-throws-too-many-pitches" Wheeler. The Mets have also had a pretty tough schedule early on, once they start facing some of the softer lineups in the NL those numbers should flatten out a bit.

Last two nights have been encouraging, if we're going to fixate on small samples.

Adam, that's an understatement WRT Wheeler last night. Just downright dominant. Nice t see Frazier coming back strong too. This is the deepest roster they've had in recent memory.

I never realized he could throw that hard. He was over 100 mph on at least one pitch.

OK. It went like this:

Ha! That's a real knee-slapper!

I was going to say "hysterical" but...
