Mickey Mantle rookie card stolen in Orange Park sports shop burglary

The Costas-Crystal crime ring must be stopped!

Burglars busted into Dan’s Sports Cards in Orange Park this morning and stole a set of baseball cards worth $50,000, including a rare rookie of New York Yankee Mickey Mantle.

Owner Dan Williams said the burglary at 2177 Kingsley Ave. occurred shortly before 3 a.m. He said someone cut power to the strip mall where his shop is located and then busted into the business by throwing a piece of concrete through the glass front door.

Once inside, the thief or thieves stole three display cases, including a full set of 1952 Topps cards, including the Mickey Mantle Rookie. Williams said the Mantle card is worth about $20,000. He placed the total loss at $100,000.

Those criminals are either really avid card collectors or really stupid. They're caught the minute they try to sell the Mantle for cash. It's not just every day someone shells out $20,000+ for a Mickey Mantle rookie card.

#1, I'm sure there is no shortage of buyers who don't care about the provenance of the card as long as they can have it. The only risk for the crook is selling to a buyer who may actually be five-oh.

Criminals tend not to sell stolen goods at retail prices. I'm pretty darn sure they can find somebody to buy it for 5K and not rat them out.

Or they could trade it for three stolen Jackie Jensens and one stolen Pancho Herrera.

Things were so much innocent back in the 1970s when I used to roam Sports Corner downstairs in the Village at the Bergen Mall. Nothing as thrilling as heading down the escalator with a wad of cash from the week spent washing dishes at the Rathskeller and delivering the (afternoon) Bergen Record. If only I had kept them all.

The robber was heard mumbling as her walked out "Damn bloggers need to stay in their mom's basement and shut up".

I don't think anyone with the underworld nickname of 'The Professor' had anything to do with this.

No battery backup for an alarm? Seems odd. I would have thought an insurance company would insist.
