Miguel Sano to have Tommy John surgery

Miguel Sano’s worst fears came true on Saturday morning.

The highly-touted third base prospects has a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament and will need Tommy John surgery. Sano will fly to Minnesota next week to have the surgery.

Sano was injured during Thursday’s intrasquad game when he rushed a throw to retire Kurt Suzuki.

The ordeal goes back to the minor league season, when the elbow bothered him while he played for Class AA New Britain. It continued to bother him while he played for Estrellas of the Dominican Winter League, and the decision was made for him to rest for two weeks. He tired to throw after that and still in problems so, during the first week of November, the decision was made to shut him down for the remainder of the winter ball season because of the strained UCL.

...The Twins were careful with Sano in some throwing drills. But he passed all the tests and was given the green light to play. He could go through all the drills he wanted but the real test would come during game action when he would have to make throws from different angels.

It didn’t take long for him to be tested, as he had to hurry to make the play on Suzuki.

Tommy John rehab for position players isn’t as extensive as pitchers, but indications are that Sano’s season could be over.

Thanks to Los.

The Twins seem pretty snake-bit at this point. I mean their crappiness has been mainly a result of poor and cheap management but there have been a few really bad injuries.

Who else has been hurt?

I was thinking of Morneau's concussions which essentially have ended his career and Mauer's sundry issues, although he did play a full season last year.

The Rockies have Morneau penciled in as their full-time first baseman this year.

Oh I know, Tom, I'm speaking metaphorically. He's not the same player he was, I guess is what I mean. Seems a unfortunate turn of events.

Oh man, that really sucks. At least Tommy John isn't quite as serious for position players. Hopefully it doesn't derail his career too much. He looks like he could be a pretty special player.

I'm surprised Rene Gayo was at the doctor's office.

my first thought was wondering if it would affect his swing as well as his throwing. Unfortunately, the TJS wiki page lists only Shin Soo-Choo as significant position players who had the surgery, and it didn't seems to affect his offense.

That's an n of 1, of course

Tony Womack had TJS before his 2004 season, which happened to be the one decent season in his career.

Kelly Johnson had Tommy John surgery in 2006. Rafael Furcal had it last year. I know there have been a slew of others, but I'm drawing a blank as to who else.

Carl Crawford had the surgery in 2012. Hard to draw much of a conclusion there, however.

Beyond the box score has a pretty big list of players (488) who had the surgery. Many are minor leaguers, but there are some names I didn't know on the hitters list as well, including Matt Holliday (back in 2001), Dustin Ackley, Zach Cozart, Luke Scott, Xavier Nady (twice) and of course Rick Ankiel. I thought Scott Rolen had it too, but he's not on the list.

Just eyeballing it with B-R, I wasn't able to tell much of a before-after difference. Of course many of those players are marginal to begin with.

This bears repeating.

Rocco Baldelli had TJS at one point I believe. I think it was around 2008/2009.

It's too bad this didn't surface last year so he could be six months further into his recovery.

2005. He tore his ACL in the offseason playing t-ball with his little brother and then as he was making his way back his arm exploded.

He tired to throw after that and still in problems so . . .

This is the leading newspaper in Minnesota? Even now, more than 12 hours after it was posted, it hasn't been corrected.

Do I remember Carlos Quentin needing Tommy John surgery and playing through the injury in the College World Series? I have this vague recollection of him basically shoveling the ball in from the outfield.
