Mike Gimbel’s baseball portion of his website

Hi All,

As many of you are aware, I have been (very slowly) developing my website. Not all is perfect, and I hope you don’t mind some basic snafu’s.

The website is www.mikegimbel.com and contains political, physics and baseball areas.

If you are only interested in the baseball area of the website, the baseball area can be directly gotten to via this address: www.mikegimbel.com/album3/album3_006.htm

The baseball area has (partial list):
•a copy of the introduction and explanation of the RPA methodology from my 1994 book.
•Every hitter with at least 200 computed plate appearances (CPA) in 2013 with his complete RPA rated 2013 offensive breakdown against each of the 6 types of pitchers faced (all shown on a single screen).
•The list of the top career hitter and pitcher performers from 1900-2012 in career RPA run value.
•The top hitters and pitchers in each league for every individual season from 1900-2013
•Full rosters of all National League teams from 1900-1960, with the RPA ratings and RPA run values for every player (more years and the AL to come).
•My important talk at the 1998 SABR Negro Leagues conference in Artlantic City
•The video of my talk on sports and drugs under capitalism from several years ago.

If you have email contacts with baseball fans who might be interested in seeing the above player ratings or the articles or the video on the website, please forward this email to them.

It says '2013', but that website is from 1997.

Even the BBWAA laughs at Gimbel's web site design. (Now please excuse me a moment while I go get my cornea surgically repaired.)

The old "self-link to the primitive looking, Marxist-influenced baseball site" trick! First time this week!

Wow...ouch... post 2 nailed it(and 1,3 also)

Okay...now I'm just going to explore the site some...any help on the following.

1. What is RPA? (Run production average) I tried to read the introduction on it from the book, but 8 paragraphs in, it still hadn't said anything so I gave up.

2. What is run value (for pitchers?)

I like looking at these poorly designed sites because I can feel good about my pedestrian, but not eye-damaging design skills. Even Geocities.com sites looked better than this.

<aside>

Mike, pssst. Over here. Ok, now that I have your attention I want to teach you a really cool trick for website design.....

Try this tag out and be sure to put it around text you don't want anyone to miss....

<marquee></marquee>

It's a winner, I promise.

I like how the baseball page has no title; instead, the first line is "Click Items to Go to Subect." Excessive capitalization, a misspelling, and an explanation of how hyperlinking works. Cool.

You know. I thought the home page for "Baseball Page" was bad. But holy hell, click through a few things and you get this:

Mike Trout Page

All the worst colors, in one place!!!

But the non-baseball parts are the best part!

The Imperialist monster is overjoyed at the fascist takeover of the Ukraine. Don't be fooled by the corporate media or the left-liberals who masquerade as real leftists, while supporting this fascist takeover. We are now at a turning point in human history. Triumphant imperialism has smashed country after country, ever since the overthrow of the USSR. All this while the imperialist monster is claiming it has no money for Social Security, for education and for public services!

Isn't it time to say to this capitalist monster: "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!"

Time is overdue to end sectarianism in the Leninist movement. Only a revived Leninist movement can lead the workers to victory!

Here's Rob Neyer's 2002 piece on Gimbel.

Here's Rob Neyer's 2002 piece on Gimbel.

FTA:
Without me, Duquette doesn't have the career that he had.

As Hesh Rabkin observed at Livia Soprano's memorial service, "Between brain and mouth, there was no interlocutor."

From his essay, Dialectical Materialism vs. 'The New Physics'", which seems to argue that Einstein's relativity was really a fraudulent, anti-Marxist plot.

This essay is a modest attempt to utilize the dialectical materialist method to teach the new generation about how to view reality from a materialist, rather than an idealist point-of-view. The current generation has been thoroughly brainwashed against Marxism and the Marxist method. Socialism has become a dirty word! Anti-evolution propaganda is being spread everywhere. Religious fundamentalism is on the rise. The capitalist ruling class is indoctrinating the working class with anti-working class ideology. The youth, in schools, are being taught an idealist form of physics, where consciousness determines reality. They are being demoralized into thinking that all of our struggle is for naught since the entire universe will eventually cool down and die. In the end, according to the new physics, all will be lost.

I think the cutest thing about this is the notion that PHYSICS, of all things, is a medium for indoctrinating the youth. That would presuppose the youth are learning any physics to begin with.

That whole website is like an "In Soviet Russia..." joke.

Sorry, Mike... I mean, I think you've spent enough time here that you probably shoulda seen it coming, but nonetheless, sorry.

I do hope you join the politics thread. That'd be quite the deal.

Yes, what's sorely lacking at OTP is a left-wing voice because right now it's indistinguishable from a CPAC conference.

Fun fact: Mike Gimbel kept alligators in a Williamsburg loft a decade before living in Williamsburg was cool.

I'd pay to see Andy dress up like General Franco.

Didn't Shank/CHB run Gimble outta town? Or was it another Knight of the Keyboard?

That sounds right. It was definitely someone at the Globe and Shaughnessy is the likely choice. I don't think it was Will McDonough though he definitely would have taken that type of shot.

I've only read part of it, but that physics book is a hoot.

#19&20; Gordon Edes originally, then a general media pile-on
