Mike Puma insulted Bartolo Colon and the Mets were not amused

Quite Obnoxious…(I Wanna #### You) Like A Puma

Using the Michael Pineda pine-tar-on-neck incident as a conceit, New York Post beat writer Mike Puma made a joke about Bartolo Colon’s weight in his game recap of this past Thursday’s 4–1 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field. In his lede, Puma wrote under the headline “LARDBALL”:

“If the umpires searched Bartolo Colon’s neck for a foreign substance on Thursday, chances are they only would have found peanut butter.”

In the recap’s next paragraph, Puma continued to drive the point home that Colon weighs more than the average person by referring to him as “rotund.” Apparently, Mets players were not amused. According to Daily News reporters Justin Tasch and Kristie Ackert, the team refused to speak with the media after Friday night’s win until Puma was no longer in their presence. Puma was escorted out of the clubhouse without incident, and then the players began taking questions as promised. The team refused to comment on the incident.

"Butterball" sounds way more flattering.

Colon prefers to be known as "The Clifton Comet".

It's funny cuz it's true!

I note that this thread has a "Diet Pill Powerhouse" advertisement at the bottom of the page, with a photo of what appears to be Bartolo Colon in drag.

Should have just stuck to PED jokes.

I'm getting a McDonalds ad (which is also appropriate). Did your ad look like this?

If it was a newspaper story, he would not have written "Lardball" headline.

and don't know if this is still true, but back in the day the tabloid rewrite guys sometimes used to have a heavy hand. would be interesting if the beat guy didn't write the wisecracks, either.

odd comments for a beat guy to write, but wouldn't be surprising from a wannabe geeky desk guy who doesn't see a lot of sunlight ever. basically you could probably pull off the peanut butter line if it's well-crafted, with no snarky headline and no repeating the point thereafter.

Fat people are one of the few remaining groups one can insult with impunity. (And white Christians, of course.)

What about Juggalos and Bronys?

Don't forget pedophiles, rednecks, gangbangers, gypsies, short people, actors, rich people, rapists, bad drivers, motorcyclists, drunk drivers, drink airline passengers, bad parents, smelly people...
   12. You Know Nothing JT Snow (YR) Posted: April 27, 2014 at 10:20 AM (#4695218)
But especially Juggalos. #### those guys.
   13. Robert in Manhattan Beach Posted: April 27, 2014 at 02:27 PM (#4695327)
I would not recommend insulting gangbanggers with impunity.

New age gurus and religious quacks of any persuasion, the mother's basement crowd, Beverly Hills yoga teachers, pet owners who feed their mutts gourmet pet food, athletes who do the Jesus Point, Tea Party morons, race hustlers, West Bank settlers, celebrities with serial face lifts, "family values" preaching politicians, people with sagging flesh and 30-year old tattoos, and of course that old standby, the BBWAA....
   17. Greg K Posted: April 27, 2014 at 04:50 PM (#4695401)
And Yankee fans.

Anybody's ever been to church in the South would realize that your being redundant here.

Technically, Garvey qualifies under at least half a dozen of those descriptions already, but I have no problem giving him a special qualifier just in case he ceases to be a any of those things.

Celebrity DJ's.

I mean, it's one thing if you're having a party and Kobe Bryant is behind the turntables spinning discs. OK, that's a celebrity DJ. But someone whose entire celebrity is predicated on being a DJ? I don't get that at. all.
   24. Jeltzandini Posted: April 28, 2014 at 10:55 AM (#4695743)
Google the variants of "last acceptable bigotry" and you will find many, many groups of people who claim to be its target.
   25. SoSHially Unacceptable Posted: April 28, 2014 at 11:03 AM (#4695753)
I think there's a difference between making fun of things people do (run for office, rape, parent badly) and those that people simply are (short, fat, black, southern). I don't think there's anything wrong with targeting the first group for jibes - the latter kind we ought to avoid.

Anybody that's ever been to a Jeff Foxworthy/Lewis Grizzard/Larry The Cable Guy performance would realize not only can you insult them with impunity. they will reward you handsomely for doing so.
