1. Harveys WallbangersGood luck Whitey!
Amen to that. One also worries about somebody cracking a vertebra and it going unnoticed in the commotion – I've known that to happen. I hope Whitey is OK.
Omar Vizquel is the only active player who played in 1990, when Whitey last managed. If Jamie Moyer comes back, he would be a second. Moyer joined the Cardinals in 1991, so he just missed Whitey. Since Vizquel was on the Mariners his first few years, Moyer would be the only active player to play against a Herzog team.
The last guy to manage against Herzog is still active though.
And interestingly, it's not TLR. Though they spent 11 years active together, including one half season in the same division. But when LaRussa took over the ChiSox job with 54 games left in 1979, they were already done with their season series with the Royals. After that, Whitey hightailed it to the NL.
McKeon?
The 1990 Cardinals: the only team managed by three guys who each had over 1,000 wins in the dugout. And they all won at least one World Series title. And they're all in (or will be in) Cooperstown.
30-22 vs. Jack McKeon
38-43 vs. Jim Leyland
48-60 vs. Davey Johnson
And guys recently around:
24-29 vs. Joe Torre
8-8 vs. Bobby Cox
2-6 vs. Lou Piniella
59-62 vs. Tommy Lasorda, who was honorary coach for a game for the Dodgers.
I guess either Leyland of Johnson will be the last man standing that Herzog ever managed against. At the other extreme end, Herzog managed against Paul Richards who helped resurrect the White Sox in 1951.
