Let’s turn to sabermetrics. According to Baseball Prospectus, Pujols had the NL’s highest VORP (value over a replacement) by a huge gap. No NL player was close to him.
I don’t know if “clutch” hitting really exists, but I’ll play along. Pujols had a better batting average than Howard (.339 to .320) with runners in scoring position. (And Pujols had a higher batting average with runners in scoring position and two out). Albert didn’t have as many opportunities, with 60 fewer ABs than Howard with runners in scoring position. That might explain, in part, why Howard ended up with more RBIs.
Let’s look at the “Close and Late” statistic used by STATS LLC. What is a hitter’s batting average in the seventh inning or later in a one-run or tied game? Pujols .314 in those “Close and Late” situations. Howard batted .139 from the seventh inning on, and .158 in “Close and Late” at-bats.
...Pujols’ team stayed in wild-card playoff contention for five months and exceeded expectations by finishing 10 games over .500. He has nothing to apologize for but may get snubbed again by the BBWAA.

Edit: By which I mean sportswriters/BBWAA members, not St. Louis writers in general.
I'm pretty sure some of the ESPN guys have written that. I'm sure there have been others. But it really doesn't matter unless they're MVP voters, and I don't know how many actual voters who have stated their opinion.
I think Pujols will win the MVP, and it won't be particularly close.

Bernie liked to look beyond the stats when Bonds was playing.

Why? All that will happen is one day you'll wake up and find out that Murray Chass has declared you to be a scourge to mankind

most people have no problem looking beyond the stats in regards to Bonds, but Bernie also wanted Bonds to play for the Cardinals multiple times. Bernie is about as saber friendly as you can get from a mainstream BBWAA writer. He is still an ass at times due to personal grudges (guy cried about the press box in multiple articles.----ooh, no air conditioning at a baseball game) and stubborness.
He could at least cite my stats....
I do all the time, usually by also stating a stat developed by a guy who has no love for the Cardinals :)
