MIL J-S blog: [Francisco] Cordero says Brewers blew chance

I just talked with Francisco Cordero and he said the Brewers blew their chance to keep him as their closer by not agreeing to talk about a contract extension last spring. Cordero… signed a free-agent deal with Cincinnati in late November and is back in town as the Reds play the Brewers tonight. The Reds topped the Brewers’ four-year, $42 million offer to Cordero with a $46 million deal over the same term.

But Cordero said it never would have come to that had the Brewers agreed to talk about an extension last spring before the season began. He also said he would have signed for less money at that time.

“They would have taken a risk and I would have taken a risk,” said Cordero. “They could have had me for less money. They said they wanted to see me pitch.”
...
When the Reds came in with their $46 million offer, Cordero said his agent, Bean Stringfellow, told the Brewers they had a better offer from a team “in the same division.”

“I think (the Brewers) thought we were bluffing,” said Cordero. “We really did have a better offer. We said they needed to make a better offer. They didn’t do it.”

See, in this scenario that I'm just revealing now, I would have taken less money! And even though my actions show that I will take the most most, that's only because you're looking at my actions, instead of my words!

Cordero says Brewers Could Have Made a Bad Deal Instead of a Passing on a Terrible One

AP:
Miffed he couldn’t get a contract done before the start of the season, Cordero pitched brilliantly last year, saving a club-record 44 games and making the All-Star team.

“I really appreciated what the Brewers did. They brought me here, they gave me a second chance to be a closer,” he said. “I wanted to get something done early in spring training … but the answer was ‘We want to see you pitch.”’
...
“The money’s good, always. No doubt,” Cordero said. “It’s always good to have the money. But I’ve seen people who got the money who never win. It’s not about money only, it’s about winning. I believe we’ve got a pretty good chance over here.”
...
Cordero said it didn’t hurt that he felt the Reds were the most aggressive team pursuing him. Cordero said he’d be playing pool or dominoes with friends and family in the Dominican Republic and he’d have to stop repeatedly because the Reds kept calling him.

“It was phone call after phone call after phone call. It showed you that they really wanted you on the team and they believed that you could help the team,” Cordero said. “It was pretty fun in the offseason, being in the Dominican and the phone never stopped ringing.”

Let's revive this thread

or 2011
or maybe mid-2010

if it's in mid-2009 or even mid-2008, somehow, ooh that won't be pretty.

Screw it - as a Reds fan, I love the Cordero signing.

I know that sounds delusional, but what was Krivsky really going to do with that money - sign Eric Milton again? At least they are overpaying for someone who has a track record of being good. And given Krivsky's past (the now-miraculous Kearns/Lopez deal) I think it's pretty important for Cincy to have a decent pen; otherwise, he's gonna do something like flip Jay Bruce for Brian Fuentes and Clint Barmes.

Also, Cueto's 2nd start: 6.1 IP, 5H, 2R (both earned), 0BB(!), 8K. 96 pitches. Wow!

They don't need Cordero. They've got Bill Mota to pitch in key situations.

Spanish for "Guillermo Mota" would actually be "Bill Speck". Unless you take "Mota" to be a drug reference.

Bean Stringfellow.

That is all.

Cordero said it never would have come to that had the Brewers given him a contract extension in the spring of '07... General manager Doug Melvin said the Brewers did offer Cordero a two-year extension that would have turned into a three-year deal because his 2007 contract would have been torn up.

"I recall we did make a proposal, but we didn't get a counter (offer)," Melvin said. "We never reached any type of negotiating stage. I don't know if they gave us a chance. They never gave us a proposal."
...
Melvin seemed surprised that Cordero would characterize [this offseason's] $42 million offer as not being aggressive.

"We were aggressive, but there's a certain point you go to where you have to back off. We would've almost doubled his salary. We went beyond what we wanted. We only wanted to go to $40 million but we went to $42 million.

"It's just the way negotiations are. Their feelings were hurt when we gave them the deadline. He'll survive. He's going to be happy with $46 million."

It was asinine for the Reds to pay $46 million for Cordero and it would have been asinine for the Brewers to spend $42 million for him.

Nobody should overpay for a closer, especially not a smaller market team. Don't even get me started on how the Brewers took a quarter of the money they "saved" when Cordero left and spent it on whatever's left of Eric Gagne.

Organizations have different strengths and weaknesses, and the Reds' glaring weakness for the last few years is developping reliable relief pitching. As no. 5 asks, what else were the Reds going to do with that money? They felt that Harang, Arroyo, and a bunch of young guys could fill the rotation. The position player roles are mostly filled. Maybe they could've upgraded at catcher, but the market there was weak. I'm glad they pulled the trigger on Cordero. Not only does it shore up their bullepen, but it also has the ancillary benefit of weakening a division rival.

cordero might have had 44 saves but i remember may games in which the nl central knocked him around. i dont think he would be worth 3/30 or anything close

I don't know what you guys are talking about when you mention the bullpen as a weakness for the Reds the last few years. They solved that problem with the trade for Bray and Majewski, remember?

Screw it - as a Reds fan, I love the Cordero signing.

I think it was a good signing for the Reds. It also probably would have been a waste of money for the Brewers.
