MIL Journal-Sentinel blog: What Prince had to say

I thought you folks would like to hear some of the comments from Prince Fielder after he hit his first home run of the 2008 season today—a two-run shot in the 10th inning that gave the Brewers a much-needed 5-3 victory over St. Louis.

Fielder, who teammates said was starting to feel the pressure of not hitting a homer, thought for a moment about acting cool upon returning to the dugout. But he just couldn’t.

Instead, Fielder started hopping up and down, arms raised, as teammates mobbed him and started pounding on his helmet and slapping hands. Suddenly, kindergarten broke out.

“I was trying to act tough but I couldn’t hold it,” said Fielder…“It was like Little League. Just jumping up and down like a kid.”
...
While he tried to tune it out, he was well aware that many were pinning his power drought to his announced decision in spring training to become a vegetarian.

Making light of that situation, teammate and friend Joe Dillon preceded Fielder into the post-game clubhouse and loudly announced, “Prince had steak and eggs for breakfast!” Dillon, of course, was kidding.

I was afraid of this scenario, after Villaneuva and Parra had rough outings lately.
In discussing options Thursday to open a spot for the return of Gallardo from the disabled list, Yost did not sound as if he planned to oust Bush.

"'Bushie' is a guy that's very durable, a great competitor, a guy that can be a 200-inning guy. That's very valuable," Yost said.

The decision has been made to insert Gallardo in the rotation Sunday in Cincinnati, the spot in which Bush has been pitching. But Yost could opt to push Bush back in the rotation and remove either Carlos Villanueva or Manny Parra, neither of whom has been effective of late.

"We haven't decided yet," said Yost, who met with general manager Doug Melvin and pitching coach Mike Maddux to discuss the situation. "We're talking things through, making sure we've got everything covered."
...
Villanueva (1-2, 6.19) struggled in his last two outings, allowing 15 hits and nine runs in 10 2/3 innings. Parra (1-2, 5.40) has been unable to go deep in games, making it through only four innings for the second consecutive start Thursday against St. Louis.

Ah, the key is no Vargas. Bush is annoying in his own way but has had streaks of competence.

But really, this just highlights another of Ned's limitations. He doesn't know who to believe is "better" based on whatever standard he has as his framework. He's looking at results which at this point are borderline useless.

Ned can recognize the obvious like a Ryan Braun. But give him guys of seemingly similar abilities and he's hamstrung. Because deep down I don't think he knows what he values other than good results. Which isn't a standard worth anything.

It also doesn't help that Ned is in "win now" mode as he will have little patience with someone working through issues is the player isn't already established. Which is counterproductive for young pitchers.
