MiLB.com: Topps, MiLB name Players of the Year

The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays each had a pair of farmhands named the Topps Player of the Year in their respective leagues.

Only one pitcher (Alexander Colome of Tampa and Hudson Valley in the NY/P, which didn’t have a whole lot of hitting prospects this year). And one of my favorite minor league names, Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Braves/Danville-Appy), grabbed an award, too.

Strange how Shelly Duncan won. It never occurred to me that career minor leaguers and AAAA guys could win the award.

If Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg makes it to the majors, does he take the longest last name crown, or does he get points deducted for it being hyphenated?

Am I the only one desperately hoping that this guy makes the bigs?

EDIT: God damn it!
Double Edit in the form of a note to self: Reading intros is a good way to avoid looking the fool

Just to divert attention from post #3...

How soon can we expect Carlos Santana in Cleveland?
Some time in 2010 I imagine right?

That was a beautifully smooth recovery there, Greg.

Count me as another guy rooting for Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg

I'd like to once again take this opportunity to use the spiritual strain of what happened last night as my excuse for every one of my #### ups today.

Does Danville put names on the back of the uniforms? Riaan's would probably have to be stacked, or else extended out onto his sleeves.

Did you intend the Carlos Santana (featuring Rob Thomas) reference?

Alright Austin Romine!

Bronson Kiheimahanaomauiakeo Sardinha scoffs at the brevity of Riaan's name.

Contest: What would John Sterling's HR call be for Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg? (God, it's even fun TYPING his name)

Since I have no idea what you're talking about, I'm going to have to go with "No."

On the other hand, if it makes me look clever, I'm willing to change my answer to "Yes."

Furstenburg crashes one into [location]. Oh the humanity!

In all honesty it would probably be something bland, like "Spanjy spanked it!"

The Bermanism is more challenging.
   16. Tom Nawrocki Posted: November 06, 2009 at 01:39 AM (#3380281)
If it's pronounced like I'm guessing it is, the Bermanism could be Riann "Cocker" Spanjer-Furstenburg.
   17. Liver of blaspheming 'zop Posted: November 06, 2009 at 01:47 AM (#3380289)
Or Riann Sanjer "Dianne von" Furstenburg.

I can see Sterling singing "Rhiaaaaaaaaannon" as his call.

Prepare thyself, Repoz.

Of the Valdosta Spanjer-Furstenburgs?
   20. The Keith Law Blog Blah Blah (battlekow) Posted: November 06, 2009 at 07:39 AM (#3380475)
His name is three (or four, counting the hyphen) characters shorter than Spanjer-Furstenburg's, but Seth Schwindenhammer gets points for doing it all in one.
