Miller: Dylan Bundy Throws a No Hitter

Avi Miller, the only living witness to this feat.

Dylan Bundy pitched 9 innings of shutout baseball for the Delmarva Shorebirds, allowing no hits and striking out 15…over three separate appearances.

The headline may be a stretch of the truth, but I wouldn’t doubt if it becomes a fact sooner than later.

Through three starts for the Class A Delmarva Shorebirds, Bundy has pitched 9 almost perfect innings, losing that “perfect” term last night in his home debut versus the Hagerstown Suns when he issued a walk in the 3rd inning of the game.

Other than that, Bundy has been a machine.  He struck out 6 batters a piece in each of his first two starts, and currently holds a ridiculous statline of 15 K/9 and a 15:1 K:BB ratio.

A source who wishes to remain anonymous told me last night that Bundy was consistently sitting in the 96-98 range with his fastball, touching 99 on one or two occasions.  There were rumors swirling that he hit 102, but that was only what was seen on the sign for the stadium gun.

He was a great football prospect as well. Scored 4 touchdowns in one game for Polk High.

What is so daring in that comment that the source would want to stay anonymous? Was it a scout for another team? If so, why not just say, "Scouts have reported that..."?

Is there anybody who can't wait to see him pitching for the Yankees?

He's Amish, and could be viciously shunned if it gets out that he was using a JUGS gun.

Why is Bundy in A ball, and why is he being held to such ridiculous pitch limits?

When Dylan Bundy pitches to Matt Wieters, there will be 27 strikeouts, leading to the first "Super-Perfect Game".

He reached 99 one one or two occasions? Is it 1, or is it 2? This isn't like it was a whole bunch of occurrences and no one was counting, so an exact number could not be given. The answer should be pretty clear.

Why is Bundy in A ball

Because he was drafted out of high school and this is his first pro experience.

why is he being held to such ridiculous pitch limits?

They want to keep him under 120 IP this year, and by limiting his innings now he'll be able to pitch the whole season instead of having to be shut down.

Looking at the 2011 first-rounders, most of the pitchers are starting in A except for a few of the college pitchers, and a few of those played in Rookie or A last season. Most of these A pitchers appear to be on strict counts--exceptions seem to be Fernandez, Bradley and Jungmann. (I know Bradley and Jungmann's inning load is nearly identical to all the other starters in the Brewers org; they're going longer now because their first 2 starts are done.)

Well, only if somebody was writing it down. If all you're doing is glancing at the radar gun after most pitches, you probably wouldn't remember if there were one or two 99s.

(Sometimes we forget that not every piece of data in the world gets captured and logged digitally on the Internet. At least until Sean Forman can get a stringer to every class-A game everywhere.)

Any high school pitcher, no matter how good, should start his career in low-A.
I don't know why the Orioles won't let him throw more than 3 IP per game though. I'm not saying they need to wear his arm out, but 3 IP is too strict a limit. At least let him kinda sorta pretend to be a starting pitcher, especially if he is cruising through innings like he is.

I can't wait to see how he recovers from Tommy John.

I mocked Keith Law for saying the ETA on Bundy is 2013, but I think he was right and I was wrong.

Bundy boxes as part of his training, so I think he could take Tommy John pretty easily.

Surprisingly, Cole, Bauer, and Hultzen haven't been all that great so far this year. (Bauer has a ton of BBs.) Tiny sample of course.
   19. DCA Posted: April 19, 2012 at 09:52 AM (#4110403)
Bauer -- 15.2 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 12 BB, 20 K -- that's a lot of walks, but that's still pretty good
Hultzen -- 9.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 6 BB, 16 K -- that's a lot of walks, and unlike Bauer a few of them scored, but that's still pretty good
Cole -- 7 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 11 K -- his problem is 2 HR, but other peripherals look good

From your post, I was expecting a truly ugly line for one or more of them, but all three look promising, if not quite Bundy.

Yeah -- I didn't mean to suggest that they'd been terrible. But given the hype that surrounded this group of draftees, I expected them all to come out blazing. But like I said, tiny sample...I'm sure they'll all have very good seasons.
