Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Braun’s homer helps Brewers clinch NL Central Division title

Ryan Braun hit a three-run, go-ahead homer in the eighth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Florida Marlins 4-1 on Friday night to win their first division title since 1982.

Prince Fielder also homered for Milwaukee, which clinched the NL Central and reached the postseason at the earliest date in team history after waiting for 20 minutes the Cubs beat the Cardinals 5-1.

With most of sellout crowd still in its seats, fireworks went off again after the Cardinals lost and fans were showered with confetti and streamers.

With chants of “M-V-P” ringing among the sellout crowd and two on, Braun homered off Clay Hensley (6-7) to end a 1-for-16 skid and then pointed his bat in the air toward owner Mark Attanasio and the fans before rounding the bases.

Braun mugged the #### out of that 8th inn HR.

Congrats to Harveys and the rest of the fans here! Be happy!

My Dad and I were just discussing what we were doing, where we were the last time this happened on 10/3/82. I recall hearing every house in the court (cul-de-sac) with their radio on to Uecker.

The coaches are getting interviewed and they're drinking cans of beer on camera.

That's hilarious. Sveum sucking down a can of Miller fits.

Congrats to Brewers fans. Although I'm not sure why they were chanting for Matt Kemp.

USA USA USA!

You're a day late mate. Our boys' valiant effort came up just a bit short, losing 67-5 to the Aussies.

Hey sports fans, I LOVE YA!

Congratulations to the Brewers and their fans. That's a fun team to watch.

Crack open a Miller Lite for Ueck!

Braun is one of the biggest bang for your buck entertainment athletes in sport.

A wonderful game.

Congrats to the players, the coaches, management and the entire organization

I think you mean Yankees v Mets. Who let New York build two new parks without a roof? That's got to be the 18th rain out of the year for NY baseball.

It there any doubt Doug Melvin is executive of the year? In what seems as a typically meaningless award, Melvin appears to have earned it this year. Not that awards are that big a deal. I see some ink for K Towers. Last time I checked, he didn't go "all in". Melvin arbitraged his way to the division title by design. Everyone was blindsided by the D-Backs, probably including Towers.
   16. Dan Posted: September 24, 2011 at 04:43 AM (#3934589)
Towers' big moves were things like signing Xavier Nady, Russell Branyan, Melvin Mora, WIllie Bloomquist, and Geoff Blum, and trading for Juan Miranda to install at first base. It's hard to imagine a team having such a big turnaround with none of it involving the moves the new GM made. Signing Putz is about the only positive thing he did.

Melvin for exec, Gibson for manager are two of the easier mgmt selections in recent years.

Congrats to both teams and their BTF fans. I took my youngest boy to our first game at Miller earlier this year and the Diamondbacks were the visitors. Didn't think I was seeing a possible NLCS preview, though I kind of hope it comes to pass.

I saw Braun has 12 career HR walk offs. This wasn't a walk off, but that seems to be a lot for a 5 yr guy.
   20. The District Attorney Posted: September 24, 2011 at 05:45 AM (#3934607)
12 is the record. That can't be right...
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 24, 2011 at 05:50 AM (#3934608)
I really can't stand Ryan Braun (just an irrational dislike, though perhaps him beating up on the Cubs adds to it), but damn if those Brewer home crowds don't make for a great ballpark atmosphere.
   22. The District Attorney Posted: September 24, 2011 at 06:00 AM (#3934614)
Yup, looked it up, he has 3.

(Two were in late-season games with the Brewers in a pennant race -- Sep. 25, 2008 and Sep. 13, 2011. The other one was when the team wasn't doing anything in 2009, but it was a similar time of year, Sep. 26. He sure saves 'em up...)
   23. LionoftheSenate (feels sorry for the Pirates) Posted: September 24, 2011 at 06:19 AM (#3934617)
I saw on ESPN the other night, they did say 12. It immediately sounded off. It must have been go ahead HRs, which can occur in the 5th I suppose.
   24. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: September 24, 2011 at 06:21 AM (#3934619)
I figured that was way off, I could only think of 3. as noted. Either way, he's been in the right place at the right time in his young career.

He has 58 of those. (Team leader is Yount, 79.)

Congratulations to the Brewers and their fans. As an original fan of the Seattle Pilots, back when I was 11 years old, I still do feel a bit of affection for the team...
   27. LionoftheSenate (feels sorry for the Pirates) Posted: September 24, 2011 at 06:33 AM (#3934623)
ESPN did say HR. I bet it was walk off hits. That makes sense.

Ryan Braun is some kind of awesome. In the most clutch of situations, he absolutely crushed that ball and then pimped the hell out of the moment. What a great combination of timing, skill, and entertainment. Closest thing I can remember as an A's fan was Miguel Tejada in 2002.
   29. ShoeGrit Posted: September 24, 2011 at 10:08 AM (#3934642)

Thats not entirely true. He gets credit for David Hernandez, who had a few bad outings blow up his ERA but has been really really good and staabilized the 8th inning. Joe Patterson rule 5 draft has been a valuable LOOGY, and the Ziegler deal has worked out too.

So my post number number 11 HERE

The call by Bob was fun as h*ll. Somewhere after 3 and a half minutes or so on the 9/23 highlight link.

Of course, Repoz is too busy digging up another article complaining about the movie "Moneyball" to fuss with silly stuff like that

What is wrong with you young man? Three teams clinch and you are desperate to bury it under more MB bullsh*t. Did you pile up D'back and Rangers jerseys to burn in your fireplace to keep warm too?

Congrats Brewers and Brewers fans. Clearly the deserving division champs. In the postseason you'll have my full support.

No, five of those :-)
