Minnesota Twins sign Kurt Suzuki to two-year contract extension

Apparently hoping no one will notice…

On a busy non-waiver Trade Deadline day around Major League Baseball, the Twins took care of some in-house business.

The team announced Thursday afternoon that it signed catcher Kurt Suzuki to a contract extension through the 2016 season with a vesting option for ‘17.

Suzuki will earn $6 million in 2015 and ‘16.

Way to go Twins! Such a bold, shitty move. Congrats guys!

Edit: Actually 6 million isn't awful. A bit less shitty now.

Edit 2: I love the guys that turn a career year wrt to BA into a 2/3 year deal that is banking on them staying better than they have ever been....

Not a bad signing although Suzuki isn't any great shakes, have you seen the state of MLB catching recently? A guy that can play cromulently behind the plate and slash 240/290/390 is a 2 WAR player.

Right. That's why I returned after going to BBRef.

He's playing way better than I imagined.

Suzuki's cumaltive WAR from 2011-2013 is 1.9. Josmil Pinto's WAR in his 241 career PAs is 1.0

OPS+ by year for Suzuki's career:
98
96
93
83
89
67
73
111

I mean, this isn't the Ryan Howard signing in raw dollars, but it's pretty damn stupid.

Eh, his fWAR is 4.6 over that period and OLIVER has him down for 3.3 fWAR over the course of the contract (if you include the vesting year). As I said, catcher is a minefield in MLB right now average catcher line is 250/314/386.

It's hardly a contract I'd get all up in arms about. Worst case scenario he's brutal, not even a .5 WAR player, and you eat the 10 million or so you still owe him. Middle case if you pay him ~4-5 million dollars per WAR. That's fine.

Now, I probably would have tried and pawned him off to the nearest sucker this deadline, but this isn't some disaster.

So offensively he's been a plus hitter for a catcher 6 out of 8 years. Depending on the quality of his defense, I'm not seeing this as evidence against him. If you are just looking at the last three then sure there is a reason to suspect that his current season is the anomaly, he's at an age that catchers of his caliber usually start cliff diving. But his career numbers and his age indicate that there is probably a good chance that at $6mil a year he's going to provide positive value. Depending of course on his quality of defense(which I admittedly do not have the slightest idea of where it rates)

@WholeEffeinShow: @cantpredictball Kurt Suzuki just got the first XBH against Wade Davis this SEASON

They should sign him to a lifetime contract, then he'd prolly hit bases-empty grand slams off Kershaw!
