Mitch Williams: Red Sox ‘good enough’ for playoffs

Mr. Williams, make me angry! You’d like me when I’m angry!

As far as Josh Beckett is concerned, Williams said the righty needs to show more emotion to return to effective pitching.

“I like Josh, but I want to see Josh angry,” Williams said. “I want to see him pitch angry again. When Josh gets out there and he’s kind of cerebral, I don’t look for him to do very well. When I go out there and I see him pitching angry, that’s the Josh Beckett I like to watch.”

...The MLB analyst said throwing cutters, as well as confidence, has hurt John Lester. He dismissed the theory of pitching coaches and catchers factoring into a pitcher’s success.

“If you’re counting on your pitching coach and catcher to get you through ballgames, you’re in the wrong place,” Williams said. “A catcher to me makes suggestions. … Pitching coaches are there, if you get out of whack, and it can happen, a pitching coach has got to be able to say, ‘Look, you’re drifting, you’re not getting to your backside.’ Simple stuff like that. Other than that, a pitching coach shouldn’t have to tell you how to go after a hitter. It is up to the pitcher.”

According to Fangraphs/PITCHf/x, Lester has thrown fewer cutters this year and more sinkers than in the past, though it's more likely this is a consequence of changes in pitch identification criteria. There is an outside possibility that the quality of Lester's cutter has changed so much that PITCHf/x is identifying more of them as sinkers than cutters.

Either way, Lester has been less effective this year on every pitch he throws with the exception of the change-up.

Maybe they should try and be good enough not to finish in last place.

These days there's just about zero difference between the two, playoffs and last. Argh.

is Mitch correct that the Sox have enough talent as many playoff teams? Sure he is.

is Mitch correct that the Sox should be 'buyers'? No. Because the ROI of buying is an upgraded opportunity to be a WC, which in turn gives you revenue, along with about a 1-in-20 shot at having a parade. For a large investment.

Mitch says a wild thing or two.

Ive never heard of beckett referred to as cerebral... did he start smoking? Sometime people mistake the two.
