MLB.com: Bruce’s no-doubter earns Reds NL Central title

And Jay Bruce did it in style leading off the ninth. On the first pitch he saw from Tim Byrdak, Bruce launched a no-doubt drive to center field for a walk-off home run that gave the Reds a 3-2 win over the Astros and clinched the National League Central.

It was the Reds’ 22nd win of the season in the final at-bat, tied for second most in the NL. More importantly, it was their first NL Central crown since 1995.
...
Reds starter Edinson Volquez pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Congratulations Reds fans! It's been a long time. Jay Bruce is a baller. I look forward to him having a full season of ballerness next year.

Go Reds! Please destroy Philadelphia for me, and then the Yankees. In Votto we trust!

Despite being a fan of a division rival, I'm happy for the Reds. Hopefully they make the World Series.

Glad they were able to do this at home, and after a win rather scoreboard watching. It's been a looong time. Feels good.

The new Red Machine is gonna be unstoppable in the playoffs, as long as they draw the Pirates, Astros, and Cubs in the NLDS, NLCS, and World Series.

drew stubbs should get a WHOLE lot of credit because he took a 2 run homer away from carlos lee and that would have been the game winner for the astros

but i don't mind seeing the reds win. i don't hate dusty near as much as all the cubs fans around here and yes i know it wasn't MY team he effed up

the reds are big time underdogs, just like in 90

will be interesting to see who wins.

only guys i can root for on the reds is almost stro drew stubbs and minor league stro drew sutton

I love baseball. It’s a book unfolding its story. You look at your team in the springtime and think, well, if this happens, and that happens, we might be pretty good this season. And then the season starts, and everything starts to go right, and kids you weren’t counting on start to play well, and you see your team in first place in May, and think, hey this is great! Will it last? Then summer comes along, and the team ebbs and flows, but things keep going well, and you think, gosh, we really do have a chance. And then you think they’re going to fold, and they don’t – but go on a tear instead. And your rival, the team that’s been through it all before, does fold. And your team enters the home stretch with a lead and stumbles just a bit, but keeps it going to cross the finish line quite comfortably. And then you realize – we won. We won. WE WON!!!

Congrats Reds fan. As a fan of a team that has at least 9 consecutive losing seasons, I'm happy that there is one less team amongst the dregs of baseball. Best of luck to you guys the rest of the way.

I was at the game. My girl and I were avidly scoreboard watching the Cards/Pirates game. As the top of the ninth ended, the Pirates went up 4-2. My girl said that no matter what happens in the Reds game, it looks like the Reds will clinch tonight. I said, yeah, but, what I'd really like is for Jay Bruce to knock one out of here and let the celebration begin. And then the big SOB did it! BRRRUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a fun team, and what a great night!
   20. The cushions are crowded for Edmundo Posted: September 29, 2010 at 12:08 PM (#3650994)
As a native born Cincinnatian and still having about 3000 cousins in the area, the Reds are my #2 rooting interest. My cousin Rick and I have been comparing notes all summer, so I've had two pennant races in one.

In the beginning of the year, I identified two teams could surprise. One was the Reds. The other, the Orioles. :(
   21. TDF, situational idiot Posted: September 29, 2010 at 01:10 PM (#3651021)
I was wrong.

At the beginning of the year, I thought the Reds were no better than a .500 team, even if everything went right. Then:

1. Aaron Harang continuted his decline.
2. Jonny Gomes became the everyday LF.
3. Jay Bruce didn't become an MVP candidate.
4. Orlando Cabrera never lost the starting SS job.
5. Homer Bailey didn't improve.
6. Francisco Cordero was a walking gas can, yet continued to get the ball in critical situations.

Luckily,:

1. Joey Votto became the Say Eh? Kid.
2. Scott Rolen stayed pretty healthy, and hit the crap out of the ball.
3. Mike Leake made a bigger positive impact than Steven Strausburg.
4. Travis Wood continued his improbable ascent (he was a pretty blah pitcher in high A/AA in '08).
5. The catchers, when healthy, hit out of their minds (even with 76 PA from Corky Miller, they were 4th in MLB in catcher OPS).
6. The rest of the bullpen was pretty dang good.

Somehow, this team became more than the sum of its parts. Veteran leadership? Good managing? Pixie dust? I neither know nor at the moment care, because WE'RE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!

Still, better than the Cards, I reckon.

Like TDF, I underrated the team. And I have a deep and palpable fear of Tony LaRussa and Albert Pujols. Maybe the Reds were lucky with bench guys, had an easy schedule, whatever. It will be nice to see the wishbone C in October again.

Yeah, this is a bumper crop year for "anyone but the usual teams" year. The only teams with any recent championships that made it in this year are the Yankees and Phillies.

So, get ready for yet another Yankees-Philles World Series.

A few days ago, the magic number was down to 4-5. I called a friend of mine who is a Braves fan, and I still didn't feel comfortable talking about the playoffs and the postseason roster yet. As a Reds fan, I don't have a lot of experience with handling success.

I'll have to give Dusty some credit again. He got great production from the bench (always seemingly playing the hot hand), set Rolen enough to keep him healthy, semi-effectively managed the bullpen, demoted Harang to the pen late in the season (something I'd thought he'd never do), and removed Leake from the rotation after it was obvious he had nothing left.

The Reds have a .557 wining % since the Rolen trade. I'd like to publicly apologize to Walt for my venom towards him over that trade.

I thought they had an interesting team with their arsenal of young pitchers (Cueto, Leake, Volquez, Cueto, Chapman) plus 2 veteran innings-eaters. But their strength has been their offense (107 team OPS+ and leading the league is basically every offensive category) more than their pitching (99 team ERA+).

IIRC, I was on the Reds bandwagon and said so in a thread only to be mocked. But it might have been before the 2009 season, not this year.

With Texas and Cincy making the playoffs this year, only five clubs have failed to enjoy a postseason in the last ten years (Baltimore, Toronto, Kansas City, Washington and Pittsburgh).

In comparison, in the hallowed 1980s where we had great parity, four clubs failed to have a postseason appearance (Cleveland, Texas, Seattle and Pittsburgh).
   38. Famous Original Joe C Posted: September 29, 2010 at 02:58 PM (#3651133)
100 sims of ZiPS on the WWL said the Reds would tie for second with the Cubs at 83-79, 4 games behind the Cardinals - giving them a 15-20% chance of winning the division. According to SG's sims on RLYW, Chone and Marcel had them third, with 83-84 wins. Pecota and Oliver (Hardball Times) both had them in fourth at 77-85. The page that had SG's own Cairo projections wouldn't load.

So, no. Although, Aaron Boone did pick them. I thought they'd go 82-80 or so.

AL West: Mariners
AL Cy Young: Felix Hernandez

NL Central: Reds
NL MVP: Joey Votto

AL Champion: Mariners
NL Champion: Reds
World Champion: Mariners

I'm stunned at how well I did. I got 5 of 8 playoff teams (I had the Angels, Marlins and Rockies in place of the Rangers, NL West and wildcard winners), and possibly 3 of 4 award winners (Felix, Longoria and Halladay). My WS champ is wrong, however.

Not sure why it's not loading but this link should work.

CAIRO had them at 84.5-77.5 and winning the division 19.3% of the time and winning the wild card 9.5%. The aggregate projections had them around .500

I basically had them improving by about five wins by getting Willy Tavares out of CF for Drew Stubbs and by getting more PT out of Votto, but I don't think I included Mike Leake in my projections.

Yeah, the Reds bench was remarkable, and an important reason they've outdistanced their projections and are in the playoffs - of their five non-starters to get 100 PA, they got a 108 OPS+ out of two OF, a .402 OBP from their backup catcher, a 101 OPS+ from their utility IF, and Miguel Freaking Cairo - all of them better than league average hitters.

So was it Dusty Baker Veteran Magic Pixie Dust, or did the Reds catch lightning in a bottle?

He had it in San Francisco too - think of the seasons he got out of Burks, Benard, Aurilia, and others.
