Arizona Republic: Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jason Marquis likely out for season

Trade deadline acquisition Jason Marquis’ time with the Diamondbacks already appears to have come to an end. The Diamondbacks right-hander left Sunday’s start against the Mets in the fourth inning with a fractured right fibula, an injury that likely will end his season.

Marquis was struck on the right leg by an Angel Pagan line drive in the third inning. He remained in the game and finished the inning, then pitched to three batters before going down in pain in the fourth.

He lost control of a pitch, hitting the Mets’ Josh Thole, and went to the ground in pain, after which he was removed from the game.

There are certain players I can never forgive for blowing horse-stew chunks as a Brave and getting too many undeserved opportunities - something in me turned on them in a visceral and irrevocable way. Thus, my two most-hated pitchers are Jason Marquis and Jo-Jo Reyes, and Marquis never got his long-overdue comeuppance. Despite alternating truly godawful seasons with passable-if-you-squint ones his whole career, he's never been out of a job and has signed some utterly absurd contracts for the type of performance he's turned it. This isn't a big loss for Arizona: Jason Marquis sucks, always has, always will. If that's the deadline acquisition you're pinning your hopes to, you're not going anywhere. If we're lucky, we'll never see him pitch again. I hate him.

You're really selling the guy short. His 2004 and 2009 seasons were very solid.

The problem for Arizona is that the pitcher most likely (as of right now) to replace Marquis in the rotation is Duke, who really isn't very good. Micah Owings is an option too, but he's better suited as the long reliever coming out of the pen. Options down in the minors are Wade Miley and potentially Jarrod Parker. Personally, I am ready for Trevor Bauer's arrival in the desert.

Strangely, Marquis pitched to at least 3 more batters after getting the line drive in the leg, giving up a solo home run to Duda before crumbling on a pitch to Thole - and hitting Thole with that same pitch. Not sure if he further damaged the leg on the pitch to Thole, or if the adrenaline sort of wore off by then and he really started feeling the pain of the broken bone.

Marquis has been above-average in a couple of seasons, that's fair to point out. But his 2006 season is in the running for the worst of the decade, and he's had multiple years where he's been just as awful in limited time (2002, 2010). I imprinted on him early, as a fairly young fan following those early-2000's Braves teams on TBS (great teams, and an underrated part of their dynasty because they fell flat in the playoffs year after year). Every once in awhile I would see this new guy 'Marquis' on the mound, and more often than not, the Braves were losing and he was giving up 3-run bombs to everyone in the stadium. All anyone could talk about was how promising and talented he was, but I knew what I saw.

Marquis was good for the Cubs and they probably got rid of him one year too early which is saying something when you are talking about Jason Marquis.

PS

Worst seasons (WAR) by a starting pitcher, >175 IP, from 2000-present:

EDIT: hell, I don't know how to put a play index chart into a thread. try this

The guy just broke his leg! Is applauding injuries now OK? Can we also start rooting for more fans to fall from the stands and kill themselves?

His numbers look worse than they really were. There were two games that season where the bullpen wasn't available and TLR kept him in even though it was obvious he wasn't going to get anyone out. You remove those two games (25 runs in 10 innings pitched) and it's a more acceptable 5.12) He still was pretty bad of course but most Cardinal fans appreciated at the time the beating Marquis took for the team.

And of course his hitting does somewhat offset his poor pitching in most years.

I saw "Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jason Marquis" and was somewhat surprised that Jason Marquis is still in baseball.

At least Marquis could say he has something in common with Bob Gibson. Although Angel Pagan is no Clemente.

Seeing Marquis and Pagan both on the ground clutching their knee at the same time was one of the stranger visuals I've seen in a baseball game.

Depends. Who do they root for?

If they wear depends, they are probably residents of Florida.

i'd be intrigued by using bauer, but he hasn't really thrown all that much the last 2 months.

another name to look out for would be tyler skaggs. he's had a few starts in AA, and he seems to have really hit the ground running. there might be workload issues with him, but i think he has the most upside of anyone they could reasonably call up.

Sounds like a perfect time for the DBacks to pick up Zambrano.

That was Thole who was hit with the pitch, not Pagan.

Towers should go large/all-in and call up Trevor Bauer.

Apropos of nothing, I saw Wade Miley pitch in New Orleans last night. He's a local boy, and in front of a huge cheering section had what had to be the night of his life. Complete-game 9-K three-hitter with one walk, that coming in the ninth. Good fastball, slider, kind of steps towards first base a bit. He also went 3-4 and hit the ball hard, with a good swing, each time up. Is he a converted position player?

Happy Base Ball

He can't pitch anymore, but wouldn't his bat still be an upgrade at 1B for them?

Exactly what I thought of when I heard this, although even Gibson didn't pitch to THREE more batters....

I wasn't alive for it, but Gibson's Wiki article says he did.

Gibson then faced the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 15, when Roberto Clemente hit a line drive off Gibson's right leg.[40] Unaware his leg had been fractured, Gibson faced three more batters before his right fibula bone snapped above the ankle.

You obviously missed their big Lyle Overbay acquisition.

On a more serious note Paul Goldschmidt seems to have potential.

What I find amazing about this run is that the D-Backs have done it with Willie Bloomquist playing SS and LEADING OFF for the past month since Drew got hurt.

You're really selling the guy short. His 2004 and 2009 seasons were very solid.
And, for his career, he has an ERA+ of 97, primarily as a starter, so about as close to average as you can get. He has three good years, three slightly above average years, and the rest are pretty bad. I mean, none of this seasons are as good as Tom Seaver's age 40 season, and only three are better than Seaver's final year, just to pick something out of the hat, but so what? Why the hate?

If you're hoping for some stability at the back of the rotation and are picking up Marquis in one his average to average plus years, that makes a lot more sense than running out a bunch of guys who give up four runs in six innings.
