MLB 2018 Opening Day Games and Schedule Guide | MLB.com

It’s here! I had to take the day off as a religious holiday. Today it’s baseball, baseball, and more baseball. (OK, just about every day is baseball, baseball, and more baseball but I’m sure you get what I mean.)

In the "no shite" category:

"...March 29 marks the earliest date for an MLB regular-season game on domestic soil, excluding previous openers played outside the United States and Canada."

I always liked the title of one of the collections of Tom Boswell columns from the 1970s, "Why Time Begins on Opening Day." Boswell has become cranky in his dottage, but back then as a reporter then columnist following the Earl Weaver era O's, he was one of the best and the title of the book captures something special about the game and about today.

Tigers vs Pirates and Reds vs Nationals already postponed until tomorrow. Detroit weather forecast says 100% chance of rain straight through Sunday which might wash out the entire opening series.

99 reasons baseball is better than football

It's interesting to go through this piece (Boswell wrote it in 1987) and see some that aren't valid anymore (instant replay, lack of black coaches and QBs in the NFL). But for every reason that drops off the list, we could probably add two more …

I could make up better questions than this in my sleep, but here's George Will's annual Opening Day Quiz, consisting of 41 questions that give you instant feedback on whether you got them right or not.

EDIT: The print edition isn't multiple choice, so this online version is much easier.

Still and my shelf and probably my favorite newspaper baseball writer collection.

I'd never complain about opening day arriving early, but is there any particular reason why this year is starting on a Thursday March 29? I don't believe anyone is doing a travel thing to Japan or Australia -- the Cubs/Marlins kick things off and everyone is playing today.

I get the local paper now (4 days a week) and it so happens that our local paper both has Boswell writing about the Nationals and Peter Schmuck writing about the Orioles. Two of the best.

Boswell has been around forever but is only 70. He should do updates of that list of 99 reasons.

Zonk, new CBA included more off days during the season. 4 day weekends for Opening Day until the next CBA, at least...

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks. You know, this ought to also give a slight bump to teams with better top-half rotations...

I'm champing at the bit somewhat because I am completely free this weekend and unlikely to get to any of the Astros games here in Arlington. They are priced through the roof. I reckon that a much higher than usual number of fans are coming up from Houston for the weekend. It will be Monday the 9th before I see a game.
   17. bunyon Posted: March 29, 2018 at 10:36 AM (#5644779)
I completely missed that they're starting on a Thursday. SOB. I'm locked in meetings all day.

This year wasn't so bad because the Winter Olympics filled some of the dead space in the winter, but man am I happy baseball is back.

Are you only checking the secondary market? There are tickets available for face (plus fees) at the Rangers website for the Fri-Sun games.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of 25% of #6.

...

Edit: Anyone know how to find "Ballpark Wanderer" somewhere on the web?

I did check, but at face value, third-deck outfield-corner seats are 2-3 times what I usually pay on StubHub to sit downstairs on a weeknight. A little out of my budget for a regular-season game :(
   22. BDC Posted: March 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM (#5644804)
Boswell: "No one has ever actually reached the end of the restroom line at an NFL game." That is as true today, despite the opulent new stadiums, as it was in 1987.

For the record, if Heyward goes 4 for 4 with an HR, it still counts. I feel this needs to be made clear before first pitch. So we'll have no asterisks, no "it's just the Marlins", etc.
   26. bunyon Posted: March 29, 2018 at 11:19 AM (#5644829)
Also counts if he goes 0 for 4 with 4K.

EDITED: Sorry, I mean 4 weak grounders to second.

FWIW, my live-updating scoreboard site that shows scores of every game at every level of Organized Baseball is available here for now. I had some hosting issues that I'm still trying to work out, but it should eventually return to Scoreboard.GQ.

I think. I hope.

#7 -- 33/41 including some I feel stupid for not getting.

Also, the season ends Sept. 30, so if we avoid freezing weather for playoff games we'll be glad for the early start.

Nah, more likely he splits the difference. 2 Ks, 2 4-3s.

So, not that it matters, but ESPN projects the Cubs for more wins than the Nats (94-89, in what ought to be a tougher division than the NL East), gives them better WS title odds (7:1 vs. 8:1)...yet ranks the Nats 5th in their power rankings with the Cubs 6th. Okay then.
   33. Nasty Nate Posted: March 29, 2018 at 12:34 PM (#5644930)
Maybe the Nationals are more Now.

Oh, most definitely. Maddon is so 2 years ago. Dave Martinez is NOW.
   35. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: March 29, 2018 at 12:40 PM (#5644940)
Well, Maddon is looking pretty with-it these days with the dyed hair and whatnot.
   36. Spahn Insane Posted: March 29, 2018 at 12:42 PM (#5644943)
Also, MLB informs us that Jon Lester will throw the first pitch of the 2018 season. Did the Marlins trade away home field advantage along with half their starting lineup?
   37. Spahn Insane Posted: March 29, 2018 at 12:43 PM (#5644946)
Well, Maddon is looking pretty with-it these days with the dyed hair and whatnot.

Didn't he die it black or something? If I'm remembering right, he kind of looks like Brian Wilson (the former pitcher, not the Beach Boy) in reverse.

No, it's like a darker gray/brown.
   40. Spahn Insane Posted: March 29, 2018 at 12:45 PM (#5644960)
Wow--that didn't take long. Ian Happ pulls a 1986 Dewey Evans.

Joe dyed it, then shaved it in that preseason fundraiser. So must have dyed it again.

I feel bad for the kid who, in addition to dealing with cancer, has to walk around in a wig with white roots.

So after a leadoff homer the Cubs score twice more without a base hit---that's pretty hard to do.

And only two walks. (What's the record for most HBP in an inning?)

(What's the record for most HBP in an inning?)

It appears to in fact be 3. So, a MLB record was tied less than half an inning into the season.

Heyward on pace for 162 RBI...

I am currently living and working in China. Chinese internet is making me want to throw things. I am thinking I won't be able to see any live games until I come home in June.

In fairness, Urena's performance to this point may violate Chinese internet obscenity laws, so perhaps it's situational.
   50. salvomania Posted: March 29, 2018 at 01:36 PM (#5645043)
OK, coulda been worse, Cards down 1-0 in an inning an which they had a walk and a HBP from Carlos Martinez, and a botched attempt at a DP resulting in a throw into left field by Jose Martinez.
   51. salvomania Posted: March 29, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5645057)
Yadi off the foul pole, Birds up 2-1.
   52. salvomania Posted: March 29, 2018 at 01:58 PM (#5645078)
Carlos Martinez at 45 pitches through 1-2/3 innings.

Chances for a quality start dropping regardless of whether he allows another earned run or not...

42: Football gave us The Fudge Hammer. Baseball gave us The Hammer.

Boswell thinks this favors baseball? Seems to go against his other nickname examples.

BTW The Fudge Hammer was apparently 49ers linebacker Frank Nunley. No longer a household name.

Jack Morris was pitching to the score in the 86 game.

Just watched Judge score from first and as he was rounding third on the relay, I was thinking that the shortstop will not throw home b/c he doesn't want to get his catcher killed.

Surprised that didn't get nannied.

We cut the cord a few months ago. Who has a thought on a good streaming service for baseball?

I usually listen on the radio, which I'm doing right now, but I do need to get a TV solution.

Am I missing a reason why MLB.tv isn't the obvious answer here? Do you want something to beat local blackout rules?
