MLB: A’s: Crosby clears outright waivers

See…all that rubbing of the Gammons MVP trophy paid off.

Athletics shortstop Bobby Crosby has cleared outright waivers, keeping the 28-year-old in Oakland—for now, at least.

The waiver period expired at 10 a.m. PT on Friday and a Major League official confirmed that Crosby had not been claimed by another MLB organization. It appears that he will report to Spring Training in February as the team’s starting shortstop.

...Crosby has been living in limbo-land since the middle of November, when a Web report said the Orioles had talked about trading for him.

“It’s definitely different,” Crosby told MLB.com. “It’d be one thing if I was a free agent, because you have some sort of control in that situation, but this is totally out of my control. I’ve heard about [the A’s] going after Furcal and maybe some other guys, but I can’t do anything about it. All I can do is prepare for the season, because I know I’ll be playing baseball somewhere next year.

“If it’s Oakland, great,” he added. “I love playing in Oakland, and I love the organization. But not many guys get to play their whole career in the same place.”

What is Crosby's contract situation? Is he overpaid?

Oh, and on this -

"I’ve heard about [the A’s] going after Furcal and maybe some other guys, but I can’t do anything about it."

It would be nice if the A's gave Crosby a call and let him know where he stood, rather than hearing about stuff through the media. I know they don't owe it to him, per se, but it's got to be pretty demoralizing to hear nothing from the front office and hear all sorts of rumors about how they're shopping around for a replacement.

What are they going to tell him, "We're shopping around for your replacement. If we can't find anyone better, we'll be forced to go with you."? It's the truth, but it would be odd to call a guy up and tell him that. It's bad enough he has to hear it in the media, but to hear it to his face would probably be even worse.

I don't think Gregorio Petit would do much worse than Crosby. Certainly not $5M worse.

One more year left at $5.25 million. Yeah, he's overpaid, but it's not like he's getting $15m or anything.

Yeah, he's overpaid, but it's not like he's getting $15m or anything.

Sure, but why would anybody take that off the A's hands when they could wait for him to clear and sign him for a lot less?

How's his defense these days?

If he's got any sort of intelligence he knows already, he doesn't need someone to tell him that he's not performing well.

Then he should be smart enough to know that they're looking for a replacement.
   9. GEB4000 Posted: December 20, 2008 at 12:46 AM (#3034415)
They don't owe Crosby anything other than 5.25 million dollars.
   10. Roger Cedeno's Spleen Posted: December 20, 2008 at 12:54 AM (#3034418)
Could be worse... they could be the Astros, who nontendered a guy that gave them a 121 OPS+ at third base and replaced him with a Geoff Blum/Aaron Boone platoon...

FAIL.

I don't get putting him through waivers. Can somebody explain the point of this exercise in the absence of a better and/or cheaper in-house replacement?
   12. Willie Mayspedes Posted: December 20, 2008 at 01:03 AM (#3034426)
If somebody picked him up they would pay his salary. Similar to Manny a few years ago.
   13. Excal Posted: December 20, 2008 at 01:08 AM (#3034428)
Well regarding why they put Crosby on waivers, there's enough teams out there still looking for shortstops (Orioles) many of whom don't have the best track record when it comes to player projections (Orioles) that Beane probably figured it was worth a try to see if anyone (Orioles) wanted to take a flier on the guy on the off-chance he might be that player he looked like he was in his first two seasons. It's not like it cost them anything to try.

No. In the case of outright waivers, the A's are still on the hook for the money.

I like Crosby and I think it's too bad he couldn't reproduce that rookie season. I wouldn't be suprised if he had at least one season in the future as an average SS for somebody. It would probably be more likely in the NL.
   16. robinred Posted: December 20, 2008 at 01:33 AM (#3034441)
I think the Reds should have claimed him. Maybe Baker didn't want to.

the Orioles signed Cesar Izturis on a 2 year/$6 million deal like 10 days ago, why would they turn around and take Crosby? anyway we have enough dead contracts on our payroll right now ($6 million for Danys Baez - ugh)

Crosby won't do well in July or August.

Right. Plus he was programmed by the A's to clog the bases with walks. I was serious, though--given the Reds' SS situation, I think claiming Crosby and talking to the A's about it was something the Reds should have done.

Isn't Crosby's biggest problem durability? IIRC, Greg Maddux School nicknamed him the Porcelain Mormon.

Are you saying that if a player is claimed off of outright waivers the original team is responsible for the full contract? If so, I am pretty sure that isn't the case. Manny would have been picked up in a second off of outright waiver in 2003 if the claiming team didn't have to pay his salary.
   23. Walt Davis Posted: December 20, 2008 at 02:43 AM (#3034470)
Outrighting means he's not on the 40-man roster, correct? Presumably that's why they did it. This is from Cot's glossary:

Irrevocable Outright Waivers
A club that wishes to remove a player from its 40-man roster but keep him in its minor-league system must first place him on outright or special waivers. Outright waivers are not revocable, so a player claimed on outright waivers may not be pulled back by his original club. When a player in the middle of a guaranteed contract is claimed on waivers, the claiming club pays $20,000 and a pro-rated portion of the league minimum salary, with the original club remaining responsible for paying the rest of the money due under the contract. A club may not request outright waivers on a player with a complete no-trade clause or on a player ten-and-five rights.
   24. Golfing Great Mitch Cumstein Posted: December 20, 2008 at 02:51 AM (#3034472)
I don't get it. Here are some quotations from an ESPN.com article on Manny in 2003:
The move means any major league team can have Ramirez -- if it is willing to pay his salary.

Under the waivers, which exist for a 48-hour period that expires Friday at 1 p.m. ET, the Red Sox would not be able to counter a claim by another team, thus losing Ramirez. In that case, the Red Sox would also not be responsible for remaining base salary Ramirez is owed.

Is the difference a change in the CBA or the difference in service time?

Isn't Crosby's biggest problem durability?

In the sense that his playing 140+ games cost the A's dearly this year, yes. Using VORP/600PA and UZR/150G, Crosby was -1.8 runs relative to replacement level in his mostly healthy season of 2008. By this metric he was more than 30 runs worse than Orlando Cabrera and more than 20 runs worse than Nick Punto.

The one year the A's made the playoffs during the Crosby era, he was injured for most of the second half and Scutaro put up a near .800 OPS in his absence. He's so bad that no matter even his most vocal detractors actually overrate him.

Maybe they just put him on the list of guys always waiving at low and outside third strikes.

You're applying logic to the Orioles' general management?

anyway we have enough dead contracts on our payroll right now ($6 million for Danys Baez - ugh)

Case in point.

"You're applying logic to the Orioles' general management?"

give me one bad decision Andy MacPhail has made since becoming GM (before the 2008 season). I'll give you 3 good decisions right now:

1) trading Miguel Tejada for Luke Scott, Troy Patton, and 3 prospects
2) trading Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, and 2 prospects
3) trading backup catcher Ramon Hernandez (salary $8 million) and $3 million in cash for utility man Ryan Freel (salary $4 million) and 2 prospects

my point was, Danys Baez was signed before the 2007 season if I'm not mistaken - a different GM.
