MLB: A’s ink Mike Sweeney to Minor League deal

The Sweeney...everybody’s target today.

It’s official. Mike Sweeney’s days with the Kansas City Royals are over. On Sunday, he agreed to a Minor League contract with the Oakland A’s.

Sweeney said he’d report to the A’s Major League camp on Wednesday with pitchers and catchers.

“They want me to play first base and DH and be a veteran presence for the younger guys,” Sweeney said from his San Diego home. “I’m excited about the opportunity and it’s close to home.”

At least he'll be cheaper than Piazza was.

Chances on Mike Sweeney coming up with a big hit in September? I'd say, pretty good.

In other Sweeney news, Mark is close to re-signing with the Dodgers.

EDIT: Whoops. Looks like we already have a post devoted to this news.

First the DMB division title and now this! What a weekend!

Casey, Clark, Sweeney 1 and Sweeney 2 disappear off the market in about a week. Yet Bonds remains unemployed. Baseball moves in mysterious ways.

Well, there is a chance that Bonds will be in jail come springtime... Tied up in legal issues... Etc, etc... I'm a Bonds fan, but I can understand MLB's reticence in handing him a contract.

Farewell Mike. I don't think he has all that much left in the tank, but its worth it for Oakland to find out. They did resurrect John Jaha's career.

Is Dan Johnson going to be dealt?

I guess we needed someone to fill the third bobblehead day.(Interesting.....Buck and Suzuki are slated for bobblehead days 1 and 2, while 3 and 4 are still left open. No Joe Blanton, though.....)
   9. Dan Posted: February 11, 2008 at 04:46 AM (#2687920)
The lack of Blanton or Street bobbleheads seems foreboding.

Or Mark Ellis or Eric Chavez.
   11. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: February 11, 2008 at 05:27 AM (#2687933)
Naw. Street and Ellis have had one. Chavez has had two. Blanton, you figure, would only be natural to have one on a team that in general doesn't have many established players to still make one for.

(I think I sound way more serious than I mean to be)

There's no Barton bobblehead either.

Oh, I didn't realize he was a righty. Ok, good pick-up.

There's no Beane bobblehead either. Dun dun dun.

What about a Jack Cust bobblehead? < insert steroids joke here >
   15. JMM Posted: February 11, 2008 at 06:06 AM (#2687957)
while (bobblehead days) 3 and 4 are still left open.

3) Ken Korach
4) Lon Simmons
   16. Crispix Attacks Posted: February 11, 2008 at 06:08 AM (#2687959)
They should take up both days with Blanton. One with a bobble-head, and one with a bobble-belly.
   17. JMM Posted: February 11, 2008 at 06:14 AM (#2687961)
Or given that they are celebrating the 40th anniverary all year

3) Dick Williams (since he's going into the HoF)
4) Charlie O (the mule, not Finley).
   18. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: February 11, 2008 at 06:16 AM (#2687963)
Honestly I'm pulling for a Geronimo Berroa retro bobblehead.
   19. Rich Rifkin I Posted: February 11, 2008 at 07:54 AM (#2687977)
He led his team to the World Series. Let's have a Wayne Gross bobblehead day. Sure, it was the Little League WS. And he was just the coach. But it is something. Give Wayne a break. He never murdered anyone.
   20. I can't believe we're playing Francoeur(KevinHess) Posted: February 11, 2008 at 08:05 AM (#2687979)
This news kind of saddens me. I had hoped he would retire a Royal.
   21. Walt Davis Posted: February 11, 2008 at 08:12 AM (#2687981)
Nothing will ever top Jason Tyner bobblehead.

Nothing will ever top Jason Tyner bobblehead.

I was at the Rays Fan Day when they announced that promotion. Couldn't wait for it, either. An actual memento of a player that lousy fits my sense of oddball humor. Alas, Tyner was released early in the season and the bobbleheads never left the warehouse. Pity.

Wow, this is all Sweeney could get? A NRI? Nice signing.
   24. Crispix Attacks Posted: February 12, 2008 at 01:41 AM (#2688435)
This makes Sweeney the 1,500,801st player in the last 30 years to sign with the A's for a brief soon-to-be-forgotten stint at the end of his career.
