MLB: Axford’s save streak ends at 49

Unleash the chaos!

Brewers closer John Axford finally blew a save. But his teammates picked him up.

After converting a club-record 49 in a row, Axford could not close out the 50th on Friday night. A one-out RBI triple by the Cubs’ David DeJesus tied the game at 5 and snapped Axford’s streak, which had stretched back to April 24, 2011.

...“The luck I’ve had in the past didn’t show up tonight,” Axford said in a note left for the media. “All I can do is begin another streak and keep my head up.”

Axford had not blown a save since April 18, 2011, in Philadelphia. The Brewers came back to win that game, 6-3, over the Phillies. His streak of 49 consecutive saves ranks as the fourth best in Major League history.

All I can do is begin another streak

Seems like a perfect closer's mantra to me.

I am stunned that he had a streak to speak of.

A note left for the media? Is that like a small-timer's version of the Gift Basket?

Thanks, SC. That note is actually quite funny. I'll transcribe it for the less energetic:

"Media

I put my wife into contractions with my performance tonight! So I had to run to the hospital. The streak is over so now you can talk about it. The luck I've had in the past didn't show up tonight! All I can do is begin another streak and keep my head up! Cliche...cliche...another cliche. Gotta go! Love, AX"

He actually wrote "Cliche...cliche...another cliche." I have a new favorite baseball player. The only thing he could've added that would've made me love him more was, "You know me Al."

I'm also impressed by his statement that he's been lucky in the past. It's a casual admission that he had to have been slightly fortunate to pull out saves in the past.

I'm an Axford fan, too now.

Canadian, mustachioed, rock and roll fan, sense of humour, strikeout machine. My kind of ball player.

Axford has been extremely unlucky or very hittable this year, BABIP of .500.

In fantasy league this week, the team I'm playing dropped John Axford. He somehow made it to me in waivers (5/6 out of 12). I'm not entirely sure how the sob owner sabotaged me, but Axford has been lit up twice this week.

[5] He actually signed it "L[heart]ve AX"
