MLB: Blue Jays unveil new logo for 2012 season

No snark. These are just plain great. May those black and grey atrocities never again darken our doors.

The Blue Jays dipped into their past when looking for inspiration for the club’s new logo that was revealed at Rogers Centre on Friday afternoon.

The new look is a modernized version of the franchise’s first logo that was used from 1977-97. It features a sleeker-looking Blue Jay bird head with a prominent red maple leaf to showcase Toronto’s standing as the only Major League Baseball team in Canada.

The design also marks the return of “Blue” in Blue Jays for the first time in almost 10 years and will be reflected on two of the three uniforms.

That's some serious drama from a two minute video about a uniform change. They should have added some quick cuts to explosions, a flapping Canadian flag, and a plate of poutine to make sure they got the message across.

Like.

Wow, they really nailed it. Wonderful upgrade. The Padres got worse, but all the other recent unveilings -- Marlins, Mets (no more black!), and Orioles -- are real improvements. I think the only really awful unis left are the D-backs and the Astros.

A-plus plus. The extra plus is for the split lettering.

I think the past 18 months have made me about as excited as the Jays could make me short of actually winning.

With the Orioles reverting to their cartoon bird, the Blue Jays should become the team of choice for ornithologically inclined fans. That should take care of their revenue concerns.

I'm in favor. Maybe they can actually keep this one for awhile, eh?

Niiiice. Me likey.

The logo is the seventh in Toronto's 35-year history and its third major redesign.

Seventh? Geez.

The first logo was introduced in 1976 and spanned 20 seasons before a change was implemented in 1997.

The Blue Jays were wearing 80s-style uniforms in the 1970s...unfortunately, they were still wearing them in the 1990s...

very nice, glad to see they didn't do a 'menacing looking' bird like the nfl cardinals did.

I can dig it.

Or like....

Marlins ... are real improvements

Gah! Agree with the rest.

Padres Uni Vid:

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=19988123&c_id=sd

They take a homey approach as opposed to the apocalyptic one Toronto used.

The team will, according to the vid, be outfitting 10,000 local little leaguers in various Pads' unis.

I actually think that the fanbase would respond most favorably to a return to brown and gold, using the 1969-70 design.

The Blue Jays never should have changed the uniforms to begin with.

A+++ transaction. will do business again.

but seriously - how many times have we had a retro "throwback" that didn't blow up in our faces? I'm flabbergasted that they actually got something right..

Damn it!
My family picked me up a Jays jersey this season, so I can't really justify picking one up next season.
The hat, however, I'm definitely grabbing when available.

I actually left my beloved Orioles hat at a pub a couple weeks ago so I'm in the market for a new cap. Sounds like a perfect Christmas gift.

Seventh? Geez.

The article is inaccurate on this point. It's actually the fifth logo, and one of those (the so-called T-Bird) was only used as an interim primary logo in 2003. The part about this being the third major uniform redesign is correct.

I didn't realize it until I saw him in the video, but I'm pretty sure Anthopoulos bags groceries at the local Trader Joe's.

Nice logo.

I expected to be able to complain about another set of backwards-looking, nostalgia-driven designs here, but I really can't. Big improvement. For the record, my favorite Blue Jays uniforms were those worn during the short-lived era from 1997-2002.

Totally love this

Even so, I'm not even a Blue Jays fan and that got me all jacked up for next year.

Great job on the logo too.

Did Karl Rove direct that video? I suppose if they finish in 4th again they can blame it on the uniforms. I do love the numbers on the back of the jerseys, that was always pretty sweet.
