MLB: Brewers acquire Coffey from Reds

Circle Red Coffey…and got him!

The Brewers picked up another bullpen arm on Wednesday when they claimed right-hander Todd Coffey off waivers from the Reds.

Coffey will wear No. 60 when he joins the Brewers on Thursday in Philadelphia and could represent some insurance against David Riske’s lingering arm injury. Riske revealed Tuesday that he has a bone spur in his right elbow and received a cortisone shot Monday that will keep him sidelined a few more days.

Coffey also could be as a long-term flier for the Brewers, who have had success in the past with such claims (Derrick Turnbow, Scott Podsednik, Brady Clark). Coffey entered the season with two years, 135 days of big league service, so he is at least three seasons shy of free agency.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated seldom-used outfielder Laynce Nix for assignment. Nix had not played since Aug. 30.

Nice to see MLB's own site screw up the postseason roster rules and say Coffey could replace Riske on a postseason roster.

A cortisone shot for a bone spurs? That will help heal the soft tissue the spurs have damaged already. He'll probably be fine as long as he doesn't do anything with that elbow which would cause the spurs to damage more soft tissue. Like throwing a baseball. Brushing his teeth might be ok.

"Brewers acquire Coffey from Reds"

I guess that's what they get for not using protection. Always wear a jimmy hat, kids.

Yeah, I guess if you want to be all technical about it he'd be replacing Chris Capuano on the postseason roster, while filling the role formerly filled by Riske. Seems kind of like a distinction without a difference, though.

No, my point is Coffey can't replace Riske on a postseason roster because he wasn't in the Brewers organization as of September 1st.

"Brewers Acquire Oddly Flavored Chili from the Reds" would be a better headline.

I thought your point was that Coffey couldn't be on a postseason roster because he's terrible. Thank goodness the Reds dumped him.

He'd be a better option than Eric Gagne who will probably take up a spot.

Braun, Brewers Hot After Hardy, Coffey Beaned

Independent League star Kent Gevalia is feeling optimistic about the direction the Brewers are heading.

Ah, good point.

I'm sad to see Coffey go. He's had solid K/BB numbers the last few years and can look really good at times. Going into this year he looked to have lost some weight and I was hopeful that he could put a bad year behind him. But the gopherball problem got worse, and at this point a change of scenery should be good for him.
