MLB Buys Rawlings From Newell Brands

Newell Brands Inc. is selling its Rawlings sporting-goods business to Seidler Equity Partners and Major League Baseball for $395 million, the latest transaction the consumer-brands conglomerate has reached to trim its portfolio and improve its operations…..

Rawlings, based in St. Louis, was founded in 1887 and includes the Rawlings, Miken and Worth brands. MLB said it is “particularly interested in providing even more input and direction on the production of the Official Ball of Major League Baseball.”

That's a terrifying sentence.

Right in front of our eyes.

Not really. Baseball has a huge say in how their ball gets made. Always have always will.

I hear Manfred is considering shaping it like a football.

I was always a Rawlings man not a Wilson man when it came to gloves. Since I'm past my playing days, I at least no longer need to consider whether to support MLB with my glove-purchasing dollars.

Dimples. You have to make it more aerodynamic so it flies farther. I really think people should be able to hit a baseball as far as they hit a golf ball.

On a related topic, I remember a few years back, there was a lot of discussion about bats, and how they were breaking in dangerous ways at alarming rates. Most of the discussion related to either the handle width or the material (maple, I believe, most commonly). Has something happened on this front? I haven't seen any discussion about it in quite a while.

The topic seems to have died down, but it still seems like I see a lot of broken bats in the games I watch, including the ones where shards of the bat go into the infield.

If they were serious about the problem, the fix would be easy: if the bat breaks, the batter is out. Not sure the players would go for it, since batters outnumber infielders.
