MLB can appeal to a younger audience by embracing what’s behind the curtain

NEW YORK — They’re selling T-shirts that read “Savages in the Box,’’ a slightly-sanitized version of Aaron Boone’s now famous three-week-old tirade, in the Yankee Stadium souvenir shops.

The shirts are $40 a pop and the lady behind the counter told me she can hardly keep them on the shelves.

The players are wearing them in the clubhouse, too, and there is even a sportswriter version, reading “Savages in the Press Box,’’ which goes for a mere $25.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball would like to pretend, at least publicly, that baseball players and managers don’t really talk like that.

I know that this is a losing battle (and that, for various reasons, this site’s a bad place for it even more than many others), but is the debasing of civil society and the devolution into sociopathy really something we should be celebrating? When you’re using a wrestling promoter whose career can be summarized quite adequately as “low-life” as a positive, isn’t it a sign that your argument is terrible? In a world where “passion” sums up every jerk with a Twitter account, is it really something we need more of?

One of my Sad Nats tweeps frequently points out that MLB could help its cause by simply not desiccating all the fun out of the game. It wouldn't even need a tailspin into vulgarity.

When jerks like Brian McCann try to enforce his version of The Unwritten Rules because Javy Baez is happy about hitting a dinger and grumpy old commentators talk about Puig "not playing the game the right way" they are driving away younger fans who appreciate joyful celebrations of athletic accomplishments. None of this lies behind the curtain, it's right out in the open for all to see.

It's a baseball game, not a church. There's no need for it to be sterile, but it surely could stand to be less stuffy.

Here is the target audience for these shirts.

Hard to pick just one from that crew, but my favorite is the large guy upper right-center saying "F-U"

#MeToo, but I clicked it anyway to see it again. It's the gift that keeps on savagely giving.

I bought the non-Yankee approved vulgar version of that shirt that some website put out. *Shrugs*

The gif is amazing, so much to look at.

My current favorites are the guy on the left and his green-hoodied kid. They clap a little bit, then the dad points and motions to his kid "look at the hooligans!"

That's Don and Nathaniel Thompson to you.

I know that this is even more of a losing battle, but is the terminal literalmindedness that turns a harmless T-shirt into a metaphor for sociopathy something that shouldn't be mocked?

It was either going to be those guys or a former Secretary of State.
