MLB Central: Cat and Mouse Game | MLB.com (VIDEO)

Smoltz talks about the ability of Miguel Cabrera to make adjustments and the inability of Reggie Sanders to do the same. (Neither of them had a lot of success vs. Smoltz. Click the links.) This is a very interesting part of the game. It’s an area of the game that players and coaches know about but, to this point and to my knowledge, there are no metrics to quantify the ability of players to make adjustments. With Statcast equipment getting added to more and more minor league parks, I would think better quantifying this ability would give a team a slight advantage when making moves or advancing players. Don’t get me wrong, I know teams already make note of this ability. I’m talking about more systematically examining the ability of all players using big data.

Serious question - How would you model the ability of a player to make adjustments? Unless you have a model you can test, it would be hard to quantify the ability.

Are we talking about adjustments in the middle of an at-bat? I don't think you could model that.
Adjustments in a game? That's also a pretty small window.
Adjustments in the middle of a season? Intradivisional opponents might face each pitcher a few times a season, so maybe you could see if the batter got a hit on a similar pitch they struck out on earlier in the season (speed/location/count). Then you could see if their "adjustments" are something they do with a few pitchers.
