MLB: Cox peeved by friend Yost’s dismissal

Peeved Cox? A little peroxide powder and arsphenamine should take care of that.

Like most everybody, Braves manager Bobby Cox was shocked Monday when he learned the Brewers dismissed Ned Yost as their manager with 12 games left to go in the season.

But with Yost being one of his closest friends, Cox was also understandably maddened by the move, which came less than 24 hours after the Brewers allowed the Phillies to move into a tie with them atop the National League Wild Card standings.

“I was flabbergasted,” Cox said. “I couldn’t believe what happened. I just think it’s awful. I’ve never heard of anything like that.”

...“They can say whatever they want,” Cox said. “He turned around that whole organization. He got them dressing and acting like professional athletes with a lot of enthusiasm.”

“With those guys, they could go win the World Series and if that would have happened, Ned might have received a three-year [contract] extension,” Cox said. “That’s all been taken away.”

How many Brewer games have you SEEN, Bobby? :P

Well, to be fair, it has been nice that we don't have half the Brewers trying to play with their dicks hanging out the way they did before Yost.

Chris Cooley joke here.

I’ve never heard of anything like that.

Really? You've never heard of a manager getting sacked who's team is considered to be underperforming expectations? Say, how long have you been in this base ball business?

That must be sarcastic or an attempt at humor or something, but Bobby Cox has obviously been in this base ball business for an awfully long time.

5,
Post 4 is a pretty horrible attempt at it if so because the whole point of the original Yost thread was how unprecedented a move like this was. I'm pretty sure people had to go back many years to find a comparable situation outside of the NJ Devils.

Nonsense. If someone is quoted as saying something in the media there must be something wrong with whatever he says.

Oh, go beat your wife some more, you old pig.

I'd like to think that i'd stick up for my good friend if he went through what Yost experienced (even if I secretly thought it was my friend's fault). What do you expect Cox to say?

Okay the second part of my OP was an inside joke, and i probably should have refrained, but please. This is practically a textbook panic firing. It happens in all sports all the time. Team has expectations of achieving x. Team sees chances of achieving x dwindle away. Team fires manager.

And yes, I'd have to go all the way back to Willie Randolph to find a "comparable situation", just in baseball.

The unusual thing -- as I'm guessing you already realize and are just forcing someone to spell out for whatever reason -- is that it was done with only two weeks left in the season.

Of course, being unusual doesn't make the decision wrong, but, what the hell. This is just a guy boosting his pal (and himself, insofar as Cox's own reputation is affected by his proteges' exploits.)

I do at least believe that Cox has been in the business since it was called "base ball."
   12. Perros Posted: September 17, 2008 at 04:58 AM (#2944588)
Cox is starting to make John McCain look like a young whippersnapper by comparison.

Lassus, you should be thrashed for suggesting Cox beats his wife.
   13. Lassus Posted: September 17, 2008 at 05:31 AM (#2944603)
I'm not sure if you're joking, Perros, but I didn't suggest it, I simply repeated it. He was arrested in 1995 for hitting his wife after she called 911. Shockingly, after he was, she retracted and they went to counseling.

As a Mets fan, I stand by my distaste for the Bobby Cox. It was a throwaway comment, more about my dislike for Cox than anything else.
   14. Perros Posted: September 17, 2008 at 05:50 AM (#2944608)
A tweak on several levels -- the comment pegged you as a Mets fan, my McCain comparison, 'whippersnapper' (should have left out 'young'), your abhorrence of violence.

I may come around to join you on the last point, despite neither nature nor culture showing any signs of evolving in that direction.

It doesn't matter what he says. He allegedly put hands on his wife once and therefore is the epitome of all evil and should be drawn and quartered alive.

But back to the merits; if Bobby keeps running Frenchie out in RF every day, and Kotchman at 1B, Ned Yost is going to have Bobby's job.

Good lord. I had high hopes for Kotchman, but he's been PUTRID.
