MLB: Dodgers place shortstop Furcal on DL

Ouch. Last time I had joint dysfunction…I had to head over to Alphabet City.

Shortstop Rafael Furcal had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday when his lower back injury turned out to be worse than the club had believed.

Management has attempted to acquire an emergency replacement for Furcal, who has been its best player this year. Assuming that doesn’t happen by Tuesday’s game with the Brewers, it is expected to purchase Luis Maza from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he is hitting .402, third in the Pacific Coast League.

Furcal did not fly to Milwaukee with the club on Monday, instead undergoing an MRI and receiving a cortisone injection in his sprained sacro-iliac joint. He was disabled retroactive to May 6, meaning he would be eligible to return on May 21, but with lower back injuries, there is no way to predict how long he will be out. He will begin rehab therapy on Wednesday.

Tough break. He was having a great season.

So have the Dodgers given up on Hu already?

I guess he let his backbone slide. Somebody should call The Maestro.

All you non-Canadians probably won't get this reference.

Ah, so's your mom.

Can DeWitt play 3B so they can call up LaRoche? Why wouldn't they play Hu?

Hu's basically the only guy on the 25 man roster currently who can play shortstop. They need to have somebody else up who can handle it in an emergency. They aren't down on Hu - they just realize that if Hu got hurt they would be in serious trouble.

Who is Nomar?

King of the DL.

Not often you see a guy hitting 366 replaced by someone with a higher BA.

Who is Nomar?

A first baseman who sometimes embarrasses himself at third.

I meant DeWitt at SS, sorry...I gotz LaRoche in a deep league and thought he'd be up as soon as he was healed. Can't blame LA for playing the hot hand but LaRoche is a way more advanced prospect.

Yeah, LaRoche is an outstanding prospect - but DeWitt has been excellent. Not just with the bat, but his range at third has been very good. He won't win it, but really, he's been gold glove good so far, at least basing it on eyeball and the basic stats ESPN.com reports.

Meanwhile, LaRoche has been tearing up Vegas. It's a pleasant problem for the Dodgers to have.

Unfortunately, DeWitt has never played SS as a pro. The Dodgers tried him at second base for a year in 2006, but moved him back to third for 2007, so I'm guessing he didn't impress defensively in the middle infield.

The only Dodger third baseman who really can play short is Tony Abreu, but he hurt himself in spring training and hasn't played since. I suppose there's a slim chance that Nomar could play short without embarrassing himself at this stage. I hope so - since when he's healthy hopefully he becomes the utility guy the Dodgers were talking about (in leaks) over the offseason, when they expected LaRoche to win 3b.

Hu fouled a pitch off his ankle this evening, and is looking a bit limpy (although still in the game), so the Dodgers might want to make sure Bill Russell is in shape or something.

This is a throw-down, a show-down.
Hell no, I can't slow down.
It's gonna go...
