MLB: Game 3 of Rox-Phils NLDS postponed

With the series between the Rockies and Phillies tied at a game apiece, Game 3 has been rescheduled for Sunday at 8:07 p.m. MT. Game 4 has been moved to Monday, with game time to be announced prior to the start of Sunday’s contest.

...Rockies manager Jim Tracy, whose team evened the series with a 5-4 victory in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, said at Friday’s workout that he was well aware that the weather could cause Major League Baseball to step in and postpone Game 3.

“If it’s a day where ... it’s not conducive for either team to be playing baseball, it’s going to jeopardize our fans from the standpoint of being treated to the type of baseball that has been played thus far in the first two games of the series in Philadelphia,” Tracy said.

“If moving it back because there’s going to be much better weather ... that would be the most sensible thing to do ... because, you know, Game 3 in a series that’s 1-1, it’s a fairly pivotal game.

“You’d hate to see a game be determined one way or the other due to the fact that the conditions were not good. Somebody slips that otherwise wouldn’t have, if the conditions would have been much drier and much more conducive for baseball.”

And you wouldn’t want the umps to be nothing short of nice and cozzi either.

Smart move by mlb! Imagine that.

Is it snowing? I'd be inclined to play otherwise. Does that make me crazy?

Something that has become a peeve of mine over the last few years has been the use of "from the standpoint of" in sentences where it makes no sense and just makes someone sound like an idiot. This all began the first season I had the Center Ice package and sometimes had to listen to Jim Fox call Kings games. Never has someone used so many turns of phrase solely for the purpose of lengthening the amount of time he speaks.

It is, but it's letting up! And there's only a half-inch or so on the ground.

Only a half-inch of snow? That's still T-shirt & shorts weather. Play ball!

Oh how about starting the game around 1pm local time when the temperature could be 10-15 degrees (or more) warmer than it would be at 7:00?

It looks like J.A. Happ is pitching game 3 now.

Well, if you're going to stretch out the playoffs too long, it at least makes sense to use the flexibility you get from it.

The forecast looks favorable in Denver for the next few days. Days.

Yes, it does. The snow is supposed to end sometime late this afternoon, but even so, it will be around 20 degrees tonight. It's possible to play baseball in this weather, but it would have a tremendous effect on the players, and make it miserable for the fans.

It's not like it's forecast to be this cold in Denver for the foreseeable future. It should be back in the 50s by tomorrow, and in the mid-60s by Tuesday. So there are plenty of opportunities to get the game in (moreso if they're sensible enough to play them in the afternoon), and there are plenty of off days in the schedule going forward.

This was absolutely the right call. There was no need to try to play this game tonight.

Tripon- I wouldnt be so sure about Happ getting the start as it appears that of the three starters available to pitch in the game, Pedro is the one whom Cholly and Dubee feel is not suited for coming out of the pen. I am guessing Pedro gets the start but they wont hesitate to go to Blanton of Happ quickly if Pedro looks shaky
   14. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 10, 2009 at 06:32 PM (#3347878)
Cliff Lee would be going on normal rest if he starts tomorrow. Although at this point, who knows what Cholly is thinking.

You're right. I miscounted.
   18. Tripon Posted: October 10, 2009 at 06:52 PM (#3347899)
But he'll be on regular rest for game 4. I feel sorry for Rox fans, the snow is screwing up their chances of winning.

The forecast for Denver. It's not going to be fun baseball weather no matter what, but at least it won't be snowing tomorrow.

Eh, it also means that Ubaldo and Aaron Cook could pitch Games Four and Five.

I am getting an image of Bowie Kuhn in the crowd, wearing a thin cloth coat, and trying to convince everyone the weather is just fine for baseball.

I am, however, also pissed that Pedro won't be starting now. I was looking forward to that.

Maybe if the playoffs were played in weather suitable for baseball, this wouldn't be a problem. Doubleheaders every sunday would be a start....
   25. Joe Dimino Posted: October 10, 2009 at 09:55 PM (#3348002)
Maybe on Saturday #24, not that the union would ever allow that - players HATE day-night DHs. But DH's on getaway days doesn't make any sense at all.
   26. Joe Dimino Posted: October 10, 2009 at 09:56 PM (#3348005)
They could have started the season March 29/30 instead of April 5/6 this year, that would have made a lot more sense, including not having most of the WS scheduled in November.

Wasn't the delayed start due to the WBC?

I don't understand how anybody could throw darts at baseball for this. It's not the World Series being in November - if the Rockies make it to the World Series and something like this happens then, I am all for attacking baseball for the stupidity of having the World Series end a week before Veterans' Day. But it's October 10th; #### happens.
   29. Pat Rapper's Delight Posted: October 10, 2009 at 10:39 PM (#3348025)
Why not just move the game to a nearby neutral site, like Milwaukee?

I've played baseball in 25-degree weather. There is nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

I get not playing baseball when it's snowing due to the fact that visibility is more important than in (say) football -- you've got to see a small white ball from 300-ish feet instead of a large brown ball from 60-ish -- but this is a PR decision, plain and simple, baseball would be basically the same game in the cold and wind.
   31. AJM Posted: October 11, 2009 at 12:12 AM (#3348080)
After that debacle in the World Series last year, I think they are going to try to make sure the weather won't be a problem.

#30: I've played softball in 25 deg weather in Colorado and it was miserable because the beer was too cold, plus hard to get a grip on the ball when throwing either bare-handed or with a thin cold batting glove. Worse if for the fans; I dreaded sitting still in the windy 15deg stands tonight for 4.5 hours. Tomorrow in the 30s will be bad enough. Hopefully Monday won't interfere with work, like Hamels said.
   33. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 11, 2009 at 01:17 AM (#3348122)
So now that the Dodgers-Cardinals won't be playing tomorrow, will this game still be played at 10:00 Eastern time?
   34. Earvin 'Gold Stars' Johnson Posted: October 11, 2009 at 01:20 AM (#3348125)
The Dodgers would like the Phillies and Rox to know they can take as much time as they need.
   35. akrasian Posted: October 11, 2009 at 01:41 AM (#3348132)
So if nothing else happens and the series goes 5, they will have played 3 days in a row and then gotten a day off before the next series. Sounds to me like another rainout and maybe some extra-inning games are called for.
