MLB: Jays bring back outfielder Shannon Stewart

Shannon: A true THROBAC to another time.

For the first time in five years, Shannon Stewart will report to Spring Training in Dunedin. On Sunday, Toronto signed the veteran outfielder to a Minor League contract and he’ll be heading to familiar surroundings this week.

Stewart, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in 1992 and suited up in Toronto from 1995-2003, will be put into the mix for the left-field job this spring. Prior to adding Stewart, the Blue Jays planned on implementing a platoon in the corner outfield spot, splitting the playing time up between Reed Johnson and Matt Stairs.

Last season, Stewart—34 years old on Sunday—hit .290 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs in 146 games during his lone season with Oakland. Before joining the A’s, Stewart spent parts of five seasons with the Minnesota Twins, who acquired him from the Blue Jays in the deal that sent Bobby Kielty to Toronto.

Does a minor league deal trigger compensation for a 'B' free agent? Please?

The best part about Shannon Stewart the baseball player is that when you do a Google image search for him, you sometimes get a picture of this person or this person instead.

I don't mind having Shannon Stewart on my bench, but if he's getting even semi-regular playing time in any situation other than an injury to one of the regulars, it's a mistake.

Stairs is 40. Lind and Johnson didn't hit last year. I'm not entirely convinced Stewart won't be the best option much of the time. He was still a pretty good defender last year.

I think it would be most fair if the draft pick compensation was triggered if he made the roster before May 1. Otherwise everybody could be signed to "wink wink" minor league deals to get around this.

Established players are pretty allergic to signing minor league deals, even on a "wink wink" basis, unless they have no other choice. Would that kind of regulation really be necessary? I sort of doubt it.

Necessary? Probably not. Helpful to the A's? Most certainly.

That Shannon Stewart has some fake titties. And the playmate does too.

And that just gave me a weird vision of a bizzaro world where steroids in baseball are appreciated and anti-silicon campaign from porn enthusiasts happen in long winded threads on PTF.

No. But if he makes the Opening Day roster, the A's should end up with a pick.

An attempt to circumvent the rules like this would lead to a complaint to the Commissioner's Office, which would then (at the request of the team that lost out on a pick) award the pick(s). I was told when I worked for Toronto that such cases had come up, but I don't know who the players involved were.

In this case though there wouldn't be a team losing a pick since it's a compensation pick. Would it require a specific agrieved party to file a complaint?

I guess the other 29 teams would have all of their draft picks moved down a slot, but that's not quite the same thing.

Thanks. Unless they consider Stairs more of a 1B/DH than an OF, it doesn't seem he'll be able to crack their 5 OF slots.

What if the Jays cut him but he makes some other team's opening day roster? Do the A's get a pick in that case?

I don't believe so, but I'm not 100% sure.

The A's would file the "complaint" because they're the ones who lose out on a pick, so to speak.

is Stewart eligible for a comp pick?
