MLB: Jays’ Rolen fractures finger in infield drill

Barnald points out (presumably with a healthy finger) this bit o’ news on Rolen.

A ground ball struck the right middle finger of Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Scott Rolen on Sunday, ripping off the fingernail and causing a non-displaced fracture of the bone in his finger tip.

The mishap occurred during routine infield drills in the morning. Rolen flew to Baltimore Sunday night and will visit a hand specialist on Monday. It is unknown how long he will be out of action.

“The fracture is actually not a problem because he can play with a fracture,” said general manager J.P. Ricciardi. “It’s losing the nail.”

With a week left before the regular season opens, Ricciardi would not speculate on now much time his new third baseman might miss.

“Early prognosis is it’s not going to be six weeks or something like that, so I don’t even want to throw a schedule out there. I can say this: he won’t be lost for the year.”

Gee, first Edmonds, then Rolen.

The Cardinals must be clairvoyant.

Or something.

I'm surprised we haven't had a Troy Glaus injury, yet.

Amazing. It's not even his knees or his shoulder or something that you'd expect was related to his being "injury prone". He broke his finger. Did Rolen piss of a leprechaun or something?

Ripped off the fingernail?
Yeeee-ouch.

his being "injury prone".

Rolen's injury-proneness (word?) is more like a propensity for getting slammed into onto the basepaths; his messed up shoulder is wholly the result of freak collisions with Hee Seop Choi and Alex Cintron.

BB-Ref lists Tony LaRussa's height as 6'1. Maybe he's the Yao Ming of leprechauns?

Is the Jays left side of the infield Marcus Scutaro and Dave Eckstein? Talk about depth!

Too bad Adam Lind couldn't play 3B.

I'm guessing the fingernail thing would affect his hitting more than his throwing.

Probably the gypsy, but I could see it being the luna as well.

How many teams have a capable replacement set if their 3B goes down? I'm as harsh on JP as anyone, but lack of a starting-quality backup 3B isn't something he takes a hit on.

But if you're going to depend on Scott Rolen, a backup who can hit should be more of a priority than for other teams.

I hear the White Sox have a third baseman up for grabs...maybe they can take it in turns to be on the DL.

C'mon, someone is going to want to trade for Wes Helms soon.
