MLB: Loria presents Hanley Ramirez with memento for batting title

Wonder if Diamond Lil’ Samson had anything to do with this…

Draped around Hanley Ramirez’s neck as he left the ballpark on Saturday was a memento the Marlins shortstop will carry with him for a lifetime.

Loria handed Ramirez a diamond-studded chain with “.342” inscribed on it. The necklace also reads: “Hanley Ramirez 2009 N.L. Batting Champion.”

On the back is the wording: “Congratulations—Jeffrey Loria.”

“It was a special accomplishment,” Loria said. “I just feel inspired from time to time to do things that players deserve, and players appreciate. Hanley did something magnificent last year. I thought about it at the end of the year, and I wanted to do something for him. We don’t wear jewelry on the field, but I know Hanley wears it off the field.”

Ramirez proudly walked out of the park with his new piece of jewelry.

“It means a lot. It’s something I never expected from him,” Ramirez said. “I’m going to keep it forever. I’m really honored.

“It meant a lot to him. From the first day, he showed me that love. Everybody loves him. We have a lot of respect for him. I think my whole family is going to be excited.”

I was expecting a bill for all the foul balls he hit last year.

For all the snark - it's a nice thing. Not required. Not the usual. Just a nice present. Couldn't be done in the NBA with the salary cap (sorry, wrong thread). Lets the players know that what they do is appreciated.

Lots of snark came into my head immediately. But I absolutely couldn't have done better than Cuffbuff did in #1.

Loria took Hanley over Pujols in his fantasy draft and is doing all he can do to ensure a productive season for the team he really cares about.

That's what they're spending Mr. Steinbrenner's money on? Jewelry?

I believe they're still paying off those World Series rings.

Pretty bizarre piece of bling, isn't it?

I am having trouble visuallizing Mauer wearing something like that, but it probably would've gotten the Twins a bigger hometown discount on that extension.

wow, nice move by loria. no snark.

I don't get the attraction of something so tacky as "bling". It makes rich people look poor.

The cost of the memento will be deducted from Hanley's next paycheck.

In all seriousness (or at least as much seriousness as this thread will allow) it is a nice move from Loria.

There's your answer.

I know nothing about Hanley's background, but I assume he doesn't come from one of the Dominican's wealthy suburbs. A lot of people with that sort of background can be a little more ostentatious. Most of his friends and fans will presume the diamonds are real, unlike what I presume of guys I see on the R train.

Does this change Loria's status as a world class douche?

This is much nicer than the axe Loria gave Joe Girardi for winning the "2006 NL Manager of the Year" award.

This could almost be a deleted scene from "Eight Men Out", where Charlie Comiskey gives Joe Jackson a necklace for winning the batting title instead of a cash bonus.
