MLB: Mariners bat Ichiro third as experiment

Because Ichiro! can hit HR’s whenever he wants, melt a box full of original Licorice Scottie Dogs into the shape of Giebelhouse, and force Ronan Carroll into making Tenaka a duo!

“He’s been outstanding, coming in here and saying, ‘Whatever you need me to do to help this ballclub.’ It has been off the chart,” Wakamatsu said. “I’m trying to take the ego out of it with a lot of these guys and say, ‘Hey, whatever we feel gives us our best opportunity to win, we’re going to do that,’ and he’s been outstanding with that.

“Do I foresee him as the third-place hitter? No. But it gives me another viable option if I go with more of a run-and-gun offense. It’s not about Ichiro coming in and hitting 40 home runs. I’m smart enough to know that I need him to be right mentally, and we don’t go off the deep end where all of sudden it’s messing with the routine that he has been awfully successful with.”

...So who bats leadoff when Ichiro doesn’t?

“Endy [Chavez] would be there if Ichiro’s not hitting there,” Wakamatsu said. “Guys like [Yuniesky] Betancourt, [Jose] Lopez, [Franklin] Gutierrez, those type of guys would move around in the lineup a little bit depending on who we’re facing matchup-wise and depending how a guy’s playing.

“As we go forward, I do like a little bit more versatility and find out where I can hit-and-run guys, where we can bunt back-to-back, where we can steal. I don’t have the answer to that yet.”

Yeah, *that's* a good idea.

... which he could, if he wanted to!

Can Ichiro beat Matt Wieters in a fight?

Man, the Mariners are going to have an historically bad offense this year. After Ichiro, Russ Branyan and Adrian Beltre are their good hitters.

Yeah let's give our player with the highest OBP fewer at bats. That'll make our team better.

I don't know which is scariest, Endy as a leadoff hitter, bunting back to back, or the idea that you can evaluate lineup decisions in spring training.

When did the Mariners start playing basketball?

Obviously, you're not a golfer.

Apples and Oranges. It's like Lee vs. Ali, or Jesse Owens vs. Michael Phelps, or the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Knicks (actually, the Globetrotters could easily tour with the Knicks instead of the Generals and they'd still win everytime)...

In other words, the argument will wage until the end of time.

Why not try and bunt back-to-back-to-back?

I have a question inspired by post #15. Is jejune and its variants, the only non-proper noun with 2 "j"s in it?

Thanks Eraser-X. Handy reminder of why I got addicted to BTF.

From your list though, they all look like proper names incorporated as words.
jojoba : maxican plant
jujitsu : sport / fighting form
jojo : no entry in m-w
juju : welsh charm/fetish
jujubes : flavoured lozenges

Jesse Owens vs. Michael Phelps

Is Phelps wasted? If he is, I'm taking Owens on both land and in the water...

where we can bunt back-to-back

and I was worried about the Padres being the worst team in the league. Hey, pick number 2 in the 2010 minor league draft isn't all that bad I guess.
