MLB: McClung surprised, hurt after being optioned to Triple-A

T.B.oelectric effect?...Static McClung, of course.

“I’m very surprised and disappointed,” said McClung, who faulted his agents on the miscommunication. “I thought they couldn’t send me down without trying to pass [me] through waivers. “Part of this is saying I understood what they wanted me to do, so I put aside personal goals of being a closer to just focus on working on things as opposed to just having the sense of being a closer and having that mind-set of doing so.” Despite the dispointment, McClung is committed to returning to the Major League club as quickly as possible.

“I told Joe I’m ready to throw,” said McClung. “Yeah, this hurts, but all I want to be right now is a Major League baseball player. The only thing I can do now is go to Durham and throw well.”

The most intriguing item of the morning was that McClung didn’t know he had an option remaining. Most guys can be sent back three times after the reach a certain level, but a quirk of service time meant McClung had a fourth option year, and this is it.

“I was very surprised,” he said. “I’m really disappointed that I was not made aware of not having an option. That’s not the team’s responsibility to make me aware of that, it’s my agent’s responsibility to make me aware of that. I’m really disappointed in that.

“I would have done spring a little different. I came into camp knowing, in my mind, that they couldn’t send me out without trying to pass me through waivers."

I thought maybe after he got to Durham he was surprised by a low-flying seagull and tripped over a manhole cover.

Who is their closer?

Who knows? They sent Orvella down too, and I would have guessed it was him.

Al Reyes?

Who <s>knows</s> cares?

You don't really need a closer when you don't expect to have a 9th inning lead to protect.

Basically the same reason why the Glee Club geeks don't need to bother carrying around condoms.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays optioned relief pitchers Seth McClung and Chad Orvella to Triple-A Durham and reassigned first baseman Carlos Pena to minor league camp on Friday.
...
Pena, who signed as a minor league free agent in January, was caught off guard, too. He plans to weight several options, including reporting to Durham in hopes of eventually rejoining the Devil Rays.

"I'm extremely disappointed," said Pena...

"I think Tampa is a great place for me," Pena said. "But I have to weigh my options so I can make an intelligent decision about what's going to be best for my future."

The departure of McClung and Orvella left the Devil Rays with a bullpen of Shawn Camp, Jae Kuk Ryu, Juan Salas, Al Reyes, Ruddy Lugo, Brian Stokes and Gary Glover.

Carlos Pena seems like a much better option than Dmitri Young.
