MLB: Mets name Wayne Krivsky as special assistant to GM

Or as Mouthside Johnny (Mad Dog Russo) said…“Krivsky did a great job, Mikey…he selected Jay Bruce!”

The New York Mets today named Wayne Krivsky, Special Assistant to General Manager Omar Minaya. Krivsky’s main responsibility will be major league scouting.

Krivsky is in his 32nd year in a Major League front office. He was mostly recently the General Manager for the Cincinnati Reds from the start of the 2006 season through April 23, 2008.

Before joining the Reds, he spent eight years as the Assistant GM for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins won three straight AL Central titles from 2002-2004. Wayne originally joined Minnesota in 1994 as a special assistant.

Krivsky will turn 54 on July 28th. He graduated from New Canaan (CT) High School in 1972 and later earned a management science degree while playing three years on the baseball team at Duke University

That's how I'd take it. That's a no-confidence vote if I've ever seen one given that Krivsky, well, sucks.

Krivsky is like an extreme version of Kevin Towers. He'll make a lot of very solid moves and build towards a competent ballclub, but then he'll sabotage himself and his reputation now and then with an utter WTF move.

I believe that is correct. Minaya and Krivsky are long time colleagues from the 80s/90s with the Rangers. Before Krivsky went to the Twins he was the Asst GM with Texas from at least 1984 to 1994. Minaya worked for the Rangers from 1987-1997 as an international scout and up to director of professional and international scouting.

Has Bowden really burned either of those guys? Milledge has been awful and so have Kearns and Lopez. Milledge has lots of time to turn that trade around but Kearns and Lopez are looking awfully toasty.

Edit-Kearns had actually been about average because of his defense prior to this season. Either way, I am sure the Reds aren't mourning his loss that much.

Part of that uber Bowden-Krivsky burn shut out the Yankees over 5 innings in his MLB debut this afternoon.

Yeah, I know, that move was all about the bullpen in the short term, yadda yadda, but at some point, though, you gotta give Wayne K some props -- or at the very least stop slamming him -- for getting the better end of that trade.

I think Krivsky makes a swell assistant type, because he does have merit as a guy that can find cheap, good talent. You just don't want him with the car keys. If #5 and not #1 is correct, it's a good move.

For all his faults, I don't see Omar being dominated by any hires. He will listen to Krivsky, and then make up his own mind. And as others have said, Krivsky does have some value in picking out undervalued players. It should help the Mets - assuming that Omar is around long enough anyway.

Felipe Lopez is a bust, OPS+ of 75 in 2007, 76 this year, combined with bad D. Austin Kearns was decent in 2007, so-so offensively, around average for right field, combined with good D; and has a 50 OPS+ this year.

Meanwhile, the Nationals have mediocre pitching, ERA+ of 93; while Daryl Thompson is starting to look like a pretty decent pitching prospect: 2007, aged 21, a decent combined 121 Ks, 33 BBs in 133 IP in the MWL and the FSL; and then this year, more impressively, 56Ks, 14 BBs in 61IP in the Southern at AA, and then 22Ks 4BBs in 27 IP in the International at AAA.

What do you know, Tim Marchman was right about this trade, too.

I think this is a good move for the Mets, and maybe we can use Krivsky's knowledge of the Reds farm to our advantage.
