MLB: Noble: Cone looks to win over Hall of Fame voters

Hey voters! You’re all big babies. You’re not invited to showtime anymore!

Not the most accomplished pitcher of his time, Cone nonetheless developed a reputation for Bob Gibson resolve and the stamina of a marathoner that set him apart from most of those with totals greater than his. How his achievements, image as a Hessian and five World Series rings will resonate with those casting Hall of Fame ballots is yet to be determined. Cone is among 10 players new to the ballot this year. But he appears to be a candidate who will elicit support out of respect and not only for his statistical achievement.

Gaining the minimum support for election—inclusion on 75 percent of the ballots distributed to more than 575 members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America—appears to be a long shot for Cone…

Uhm, what's Noble talking about? These are the only Hessians I know of.

I really cannot figure out what is meant by "Hessian" there. The writer probably typed something else and it was edited to become that.

Hesher? No, that doesn't make sense.
Hussar? Hussy? Lesbian? Yes-man? Cessna? Thessalonian? Messiah? Hoss? Hoisin?

I'm just reading it as "Stakhanovite" for now.

Weren't the Hessians brought in as mercenaries during the American Revolution? Maybe he means "mercenary".

Seriously, he's got a few of the Jack Morris talking points going for him- and as an added bonus he was better than Jack too.

I assumed the writer meant the interpretation in TVerik's #4

(although I like Repoz's alternative-- except Namath was more a Werblinian than a Hessian)

Cone was one of the most notable lesbians of his era, surpassed by only Ellen Degeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, and Mike Crudale.

I always liked Cone alot. He gave good interview. Very smart. I also admired that he was the union rep. (Being a union guy myself.) I was at the Oakland Coliseum the game he came back from his aneurysm. I was still a Yankee fan at the time, and that was definitely one of the most memorable games I've attended in my life.

Would it make any more sense to describe Cone as a square matrix comprised of second-order derivatives used to optimize a system of unconstrained, nonlinear equations?

Bad example, Shooty. Give me an 80's hair-metal girl any damn day of the week. That decade gets short-changed by today's cam girls but they were in a perfectly trashy class by themselves.

Hey Shooty, sorry to let you down like that. My family moved to Connecticut in 1976 when I was six. I was buddies with the two kids around my age who lived across the street. Their dad LOVED the Red Sox and was always talking about "Yaz" and "Boomer" and Lynn and Rice, and so his kids liked the Sox too. I decided to be a Yankees fan for no other reason than they were the other local team and the Red Sox' big rival. I was young, Shooty! I didn't know anything about the Yankees then.

I don't know about the devil per se, but judging from his body type, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Sidney Ponson has cloven hooves.
