MLB: Omar Vizquel injures knee, out 4-5 weeks

Mad Dog Russo…“Oh, no…the Giants desperately need him!”

Veteran shortstop Omar Vizquel has torn the medial meniscus cartilage in his right knee and is expected to miss four or five weeks.

Vizquel, who will turn 41 in April, was flying back to San Francisco on Tuesday to meet with Dr. Ken Akizuki, a Giants team physician.

“My knee was feeling good,” Vizquel said. “I wanted to give it a hard shot in order to make a decision. It didn’t work. I felt a little pop when I was running.”

In Vizquel’s absence, Kevin Frandsen will take over primary duties at shortstop, which in essence ends Frandsen’s competition with Ray Durham at second base.

Does anyone understand what Omar is saying? Anyhow, that's some bad news for the pitching staff.

Aaarrgh, this postpones the career-games-at-shortstop-record countdown that was going to be the highlight of the early season for me.

I saw Frandsen trying to play SS in the 2006 AZFL and I didn't feel like he was a legit SS at all. Nice stick though.

Thanks Levski.

I wish reporters (and members of Congress) would ask athletes to clarify themselves, rather than just printing incoherent quotes.

Andy Pettitte knows a way he can return faster than that.

I assume this makes Velez the utility infielder. I imagine that the Giants right now look like:

C: Molina, Alfonso
1B: Ortmeier
2B: Durham
3B: Aurilia
SS: Frandsen
LF: Roberts/Davis/Lewis (probably in that order, sadly)
CF: Rowand
RF: Winn
IF: Velez, ?? (Leone? G-Rod???)

I assume this makes Velez the utility infielder

Given that lineup, he will be picking up more ABs than Durham and Aurilia even if he is an utility IF.
Just seeing that lineup gives me the shakes. wow, that is bad.
# of Giants position players drafted in std 5x5 leagues : 0!

So much for their inpenetrable defense.

Ironically this could improve their offense though.

Man, just when Sabs had put together an incredible infield this happens. Just his luck.

The quality assurance guy tests the software I write, then documents the bugs in a not always so easy to read way.

Can the offense improve through subtraction?

Can the offense improve through subtraction?

I think this will be evidence that yes, it can.
