MLB:  Ozzie Guillen defends late-game strategy

In the mood to roll some corpesto mucinogen granules around in your hands?  Well…here’s Ozzie and his gut feelings.

The most pressing question of the last 24 hours has surrounded Guillen’s decision to pull starter John Danks after six innings and only 85 pitches.

“You gotta go with your gut feeling, and you gotta do what’s best for the ballclub—not what people think,” Guillen said. “If I leave Danks [in] and [Derrek] Lee and [Aramis] Ramirez hit the home run, people say, ‘You dumb Venezuelan. Why [do] you [have] a lefty facing those guys? You [have Octavio] Dotel and the best bullpen in baseball right now.’ That’s just the way it is. Baseball treats you that way sometimes.”

...Then Guillen poured on the sarcasm.

“I want to apologize to White Sox fans for losing the game yesterday,” Guillen continued. “I [brought] the wrong guy to pitch, and I forgot that guy leads the American League in strikeouts out of the bullpen. Why [did] I pinch-hit Jim Thome? I was dumb last night.”

That's a lot of replaced words. I can't imagine what profanities he was actually using.

Actually, it could just be that the person who wrote this couldn't understand half of what Ozzie was saying.

He's right. The move is completely defensible. This is just MSM blowing the wrong issue out of proportion. The real story of the game was the Sox hitters and their completely inability to score leadoff base runners in innings 6-9.

I'll take Ozzie's bullpen management on Friday over Piniella's on Saturday. A wearing-down Marmol to protect a 6-run lead (and throw 31 pitches!)? Wood for a 1-out, 4-run lead "save" (yes, it qualifies since the tying run was on-deck)?

Lou's usage of Marmol this first half is a bit odd. The Cubs have outscored their opponents by a huge margin and yet Carloa is among the leaders in appearances. This vaguely reminds me of Yost's determination last season to use Turnbow as part of his "Plan". Turnbow was fairly effective but by late June complained of a tired arm, blew up in the second half, and has since dissolved into utter chaos being unable to throw regular strikes at Triple A.
Now Carlos is a 1000 times better Derrick and part of the reason the Cubs HAVE lapped the opposition in scoring is that Marmol has completely stifled numerous rallies.

But he's a slight kid, it's a long season and of late he looks to be laboring.

Tread softly Lou.....
