MLB: Peavy to miss next start with sore elbow

Peavy owners…start scrambling.

Pitcher Jake Peavy, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, will miss his scheduled start on Monday because of soreness in his right elbow.

Peavy, who is 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts this season, will have an MRI on Monday in San Diego to determine if there’s any damage to his elbow and if he will need to go on the disabled list.

Peavy said the soreness in his elbow first started bothering him “three or four starts ago” and that it kept him from his normal bullpen sessions between starts.

Left-hander Wil Ledezma will get the start on Monday at PETCO Park for Peavy when the Padres open a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“It’s to the point where we need to step back,” Padres manager Bud Black said.

Well, pitching through three or four starts with a sore elbow is just brilliant.

Let's see, 3 or 4 starts ago... right when he started stink.

Is this something that happens all the time, but 90% of the time we never hear about it? I mean, it seems like a horrible idea to pitch with soreness (and I had the same reaction as you), but are there 20 pitchers out there with something serious enough to keep them from their normal routines, but then it goes away?

Have any of the online pitching coaches provided their opinions on Peavy's delivery?

CBW did one. I just remember that he said Peavy was a max effort guy. I don't remember if he said it specifically, but I would guess that the conclusion was that Peavy was at risk considering the max effort delivery.

There were some rumblings here that Peavy's arm was shredded a couple of years ago.

Long term contracts for pitchers are so scary.

that's why you should only reward your left fielders with those. at least they stay healthy...

You know, I don't think Wood has had so much as a sore elbow this season...

Just sayin'

Peavy is the first pitcher in recorded history to pitch through pain.

what does elbow soreness have to do with respect?

I sorta thought it'd be his shoulder that would go after seeing how his arm "rebounds" at the end of his follow-through.

Oh, and here's Chris Oleary on Peavy. Oleary doesn't give the most thorough analysis, but it's all I could find.
