MLB: Rockies put together MLB-record 11 straight hits

and honestly, the twelfth hit should be Piniella’s job.

The Rockies seemed to put an end to any offensive woes left from a dismal road trip when they erupted for an eighth inning of epic proportions in a 17-2 win against the Cubs on Friday night at Coors Field.

Heading into the frame leading, 5-2, the Rockies notched franchise records for hits and runs in an inning (13 and 12, respectively), plate appearances in an inning (18) and extra-base hits in a game (12). They also had 11 straight hits—a Major League record.

It exhausted three Cubs relievers, who combined for 61 pitches.

And all the scoring came with two outs.

...“Tomorrow, if you brought out [Aramis] Ramirez and [Derrek Lee] and Marlon Byrd and let them throw [batting practice] and put nine fielders out there, I have a tough time thinking they could get 11 straight hits,” Dempster said. “That’s how crazy that is. That’s how really remarkable it is.

...And in the clubhouse after the game, the verdict was unanimous.

“No one’s ever seen anything like that,” said shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who doubled twice in the eighth. “I’ve never seen anything like it at any level. That was special, something you’ll never see again.”

Assuming there are no walks in the streak, and the likelihood of each player getting a hit is 26% (league average batting average being .260), I come up with a 0.0000367% chance of this happening or just under 1 in 3 million.

If you DO count walks, it's about 1/3 of that. But given it's Coors Field, likelihod of hits is higher.

I really hope Hendry will be holding a fire sale today. This team is crap today and it will be crap tomorrow. Better to look at different crap tomorrow on the off chance that you find a kernel of goodness somewhere in it since when we already know the this batch doesn't contain any.

I don't pay much attention to the Cubs, but what do they really have (that they would want to move) that other teams would be interested in acquiring? There's Ted Lilly, maybe Derek Lee (if other teams believe he isn't cooked), and some generic relievers?

Two teams have had 12 straight hits (Cardinals in 1920 and Dodgers in 1930). However, both of them did it over two innings, with presumably somebody getting thrown out on the bases once to stop the bleeding.

I don't pay much attention to the Cubs, but what do they really have (that they would want to move) that other teams would be interested in acquiring? There's Ted Lilly, maybe Derek Lee (if other teams believe he isn't cooked), and some generic relievers?

Considering the players that have been traded so far I'd say the Cubs have a lot. If Cristian Guzman can get traded then anybody on the Cubs can get traded as well.

Well, anybody CAN be traded -- even Soriano as long as the Cubs are willing to pick up almost all the money. But, realistically:

Soriano -- no
Byrd -- why would we want to?
Colvin -- why would we want to?
Fukudome -- no
ARam -- no
Castro -- why would we want to?
Fontenot/Baker -- who would want them? what can we get?
DLee -- yes
Soto -- why would we want to
Hill -- who would want him?
Nady -- won't get anything worthwhile

Dempster -- yes and it might make sense if they go into full rebuild mode
Zambrano -- if we eat enough money
Wells -- why would we want to?
Silva -- maybe
Gorzelanny -- why would we want to?
Marmol -- why would we want to? Unless somebody is willing to ridiculously overpay
Marshall -- why would we want to?
Cashner -- why would we want to?
Grabow -- no
other bullpen crap -- who would want them?

Lilly, Theriot and DLee were the only three we could move and maybe get something decent in return for. Other than some of the young guys and the nicely-priced Byrd, Dempster is the only player who might return real value.

The Cubs are a collection of over-priced declining vets, 2 good contracts (Dempster, Byrd ... plus formerly Lilly) and a bunch of pre-FA players. And Jeff Samardzija (owed $3.5 M next year).
