MLB rumors: Giants to interview ex-Phillies skipper Gabe Kapler for open managerial position

For the first time in more than a decade, the San Francisco Giants are on the hunt for a new manager. Future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy retired at season’s end, vacating a position he had occupied since 2007. Over the interim period, he won three World Series titles and finished with a 1,052-1,054 regular-season mark.

It’s unclear who Farhan Zaidi, now in his first full offseason as the Giants’ main decision maker, will hire when all is said and done. But we are gaining insight into who Zaidi intends to consider.

On Saturday, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported that Zaidi and the Giants will interview former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler. Kapler, dismissed earlier in the week, is familiar with Zaidi from their shared time together in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

Well, this could get interesting…..

Makes a ton of sense. Even though the Phillies went out on a limb to hire him it always seemed like he had lukewarm support from his front office. Kapler with two years of learning on the job seems like a good fit for a team that doesn’t like to rebuild and is trying to win every year.

Bochy to Kapler seems a bit of a dropoff.

Kepler seems like a guy who SHOULD be a good manager but is probably not

Carlos Beltran, a NYC guy:
Beltran said that he was only interested in managing in New York, to the point of turning down interview requests from other teams. It was already known that Beltran declined to speak to the Padres about their managerial vacancy, and he revealed today that he had also passed on a chance to interview with the Cubs.

Yuck.

That news about Beltran makes me nervous about him as manager. Won't even bother taking interviews?
   7. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 08:45 AM (#5890296)
He'd rather live in New York that be a manager and he can afford to make that decision.

I don't think it necessarily says anything about his abilities.

Does he really?

Seems like a total nutter to me.

For a veteran manager, I'd agree. For someone who's a complete rookie? I'm not sure it says anything about his skills, but it seems to call into question a level of commitment. YMMV
   11. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 09:24 AM (#5890312)
I think wondering if a guy without any experience can do a good job is perfectly fair. Probably a lot of "no-name" minor league managers would be good MLB managers but aren't a spicy enough hire.

I think we know Beltran's committment exactly. He's not as committed to managing as he is to living in New York (I assume he currently lives there? It occurs to me writing this I don't know). But that might actually be good for the club. A manager whose whole life is his job (in any field) can be demoralizing.

Anyway, I was separating "ability" from "committment". It says a lot about the latter. We don't really have any idea about the former. If the Mets FO is okay with that (and if they're interviewing him, they must be), then I wouldn't worry he doesn't want to go anywhere else.

I agree it's not OMG THAT big a deal, it just seems telling; like various social and work cues one encounters on a daily basis.

Cubs are also going to interview Kapler.

I'd be shocked if he were a finalist, considering all their other candidates.

I have to admit, I never thought of Bochy as a HoF manager.

I think I'd prefer a Dusty return engagement over Kapler for the Cubs.... that's only like, 30% snark.

It's worth noting that Kapler and Zaidi worked together in the Dodgers' front office.

I think he's a pretty good fit for San Francisco.

You thought Connor Joe would be, too.

Shitty managers aren't a good fit in San Francisco or anywhere else.

He'd be really great at calculating the distance of home runs, though.

But he'd need to get the data from a weird Danish guy with good eyesight.

It's unfortunate that Caribbean families haven't started mining famous Renaissance scientist names yet. If we can have Socrates and Arquimedes, can Copernicus and Galileo be far behind?

If you need middle infielders, the Nats have a kid named Pascal in their system, though he ain't much of a hitter.

You've already got a full rotation but I think you could make room for HOFer Eddie Plank (I know, Max spelled it differently)

You could choose any one of a few Lees to add to the team as well (Cliff, Derek, Carlos)

And if you wanted to cheat a bit, Ryan [von] Braun and Chu Chu Coleman (or Shin-Soo Choo)

As a Phillies fan, I'm really happy that Kapler is getting interviews. He's not a good manager.

Do manager contracts work the same as player contracts? That is, if the Phillies are paying Kapler for another X years, does that money come out of his next contract? I assume not, and that he's just paid double.

I mean, I would assume his middle name is still Diogenes, but who knows, he could have gone all Bison Dele on us.
