MLB season preview: Five over/unders you can count on in 2019

Want an easy way to prove to your friends you’re smarter than everyone else when it comes to baseball? Just look at some MLB over/unders.

By looking at win totals, you can get a quick snapshot of where you differ from the general consensus. Do you find the Tampa Bay Rays’ 84.5 win total insulting? Tell your friends they are going to be much better than anyone expects. Think there’s no way the New York Mets surpass 85.5 wins? You just identified a bust.

Feel extra confident in those predictions? Well, you can wager some hard-earned gummy bears on the outcome.

Somewhere, Sport Sullivan is suspecting that he was born a century too early….

I agree with 2 of these - Phillies and Reds. I think the rest are way off.

I think the Phillies and Reds are way off. The others too though really. I suspect they go like 1-4 on those.

The Braves under is the only one of the five picks that I like. I'd go the other way on Cubs and A's.

Over/under on the number of days that Bryce Harper misses on the DL IL in 2019 = 61 days

I'd have to expect way under 85.5 for the Mets. They're like any of ten possible injuries away from being a 70-win team.

I'll take way under on the Rangers at 71. No chance unless the entire Pacific coast falls into the ocean and they win all their games against LAA, OAK, and SEA by forfeit.

OVER, bitches. I'm ready.

I'm not a betting man and, honestly, all five of the ones they identify (Reds, Phillies, Braves, Cubs, A's) seem like extremely reasonable over/under numbers to me. But, that said, if I was forced to bet on all five, I think I'd bet against them on all of them - maybe not the Phillies.

I'd go the over on the Phillies because although I think the current team is probably a little under that number, I expect they'll pick up a player or two of significance and much better than the Bours they picked up this past year for the 2019 run. They're actually going for it now and they have a window to do stuff and plenty of budget.

I don't even know what the Blue Jays' line is, and I would still take the under.

Most of these do sound reasonable, not the article, but the lines. I agree with 9 in that the Phils are very likely to be in the playoff race when three of the five teams in the division that aren't doing well, decide to tank (whether it's the Mets, Braves or Nats.... the Phils just seem like the team least likely to collapse this season)

I never have faith in the A's.. so I'll agree with the article and take the under. I just hate their strategy as an organization and actively root against them from time to time because of it, it's not rational I know, but I hate teams that don't believe in being loyal to their players or fans.

And the over on the Reds, really does require the Cubs to be under, so it's a dual bet, if they are right on one, they are probably right on the other.... I don't see them being right on either though.

The Reds are a bit like a less famous version of the 2003 Marlins. Lots of guys from other orgs on one-year (remaining) contracts. Or the 84 Cubs for that matter. If guys click, you're in the WC or better with a shot then a tumultuous offseason where you're under some pressure to try to re-sign some of those "stars" or you drop back to 70 wins. (Or the 85 Cubs who did both.)

I like the over on Cinci and under on Atlanta. The rest are pretty up in the air for me.
