MLB: Slumping Rollins to sit at least two games

Big Ugly Mouth…ain’t so loud no more.

FanGraphs, a sabermetric-based Web site, shows that of the balls Rollins has put in play, he has hit line drives in 16.5 percent of his at-bats, which is the lowest percentage of his career. He also has hit infield fly balls 14.4 percent of the time, which is the highest percentage of his career.

In other words, Rollins is not hitting the ball as hard as he has in the past.

...Rollins, who has a .237 OBP in the leadoff spot, is last.

“I think he’s the leadoff hitter,” Manuel said. “He is our leadoff hitter. ... To me, we’ve got to get Jimmy right. That’s the whole purpose of sitting him. I don’t see moving him around in the lineup helping him one bit at all if you want to know the truth. I don’t understand that. I don’t see it. I’ve been around him for about five years and he is our leadoff hitter.”

So Rollins is definitely back in the top spot?

“More than likely, yeah,” Manuel said.

Of course the real interest here is in how MLB.com cited to Fangraphs.

Batting Rollins leadoff in 2009 is a gigantic mistake.

More so than 2008 or before? I don't get your point.

Between the Mets becoming a hospital ward, the Phillies sucking, Jeff Francouer, whatever makes the Marlins stink, and the Nationals, the NL East has turned ultra-pathetic this year.

Well, this is one of those opportunities for a Braves or a Marlins team to come in and steal a division title, if they make the right moves and get a little lucky.

Just as interesting is that Todd Zolecki had just got done writing that Rollins was unlucky because of his BABIP numbers. People who watched Rollins didn't believe that. Now Zolecki corrects himself and explains why Rollins is not hitting in bad luck after all. And, BABIP notwithstanding, Rollins is on pace to get fewer walks than he ever has for a full season.

I remember last year there were all these posts and blog entries asking what was wrong with Rollins (answer: nothing).

So I've seen these headlines this year and ignored them, but then I looked:

.211/.254/.328

wow does that suck.
WTF happened?

I mean seriously, wow.

Phillies' SS as a whole are hitting: .203/.249/.310
Nats' SS: .324/.348/.449 (If I was a Twins' fan...)
Mets: .250/.323/.344

Impatience and more of an uppercut swing than ever. Lots of IF popups. I think it's affecting his play on D too. That never happened before. The swing still looks quick enough but he's trying to blast everything.

I trust Manuel knows what he's doing with him but I'd be really tempted to bat him 8th or maybe 7th with the carrot of leadoff when he gets his head out of his ***.
