MLB: Tommy Lasorda to be guest conductor for the Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra

Evgeny Sveltanov he ain’t!

Hall of Fame Manager and Special Advisor to the Chairman Tommy Lasorda will participate in the Jr. Philharmonic’s “Battle of the Batons,” it was announced today. Lasorda will lead the orchestra in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” as the Jr. Phil celebrates the 100th anniversary of baseball’s official anthem. The concert is this Sunday, May 4, at the Shrine Auditorium.

“I gave up a lucrative musical career for baseball,” said Lasorda. “All kidding aside, it is an honor to be asked to conduct the orchestra. I just hope the musicians follow direction better than some of my players did.”

The Orchestra’s 71st Anniversary Concert Spectacular will be under the baton of long-time concertmaster Gary S. Greene. Wink Martindale will serve as the emcee and legendary Hollywood columnist Army Archerd will host the annual, celebrity “Battle of Batons.” Actress June Lockhart will be a special guest.

Tommy Lasorda is a worse conductor than ten dogs are.

Wait, what?

What a terrible idea. But at least he can't slag their arms.

You should see him do "Flight of the Bumble Bee."

I bet he leaves Lockhart out there for too long.

Wink Martindale will serve as the emcee

Wink Martindale is better than ten Lasordas.

What's Tommy's opinion of the sousaphone's performance?

Lasorda just heard Keith Lockhart had a new career and wants to see what it's like.

I dunno, conducting an orchestra? Whole thing seems kinda gay to me.

Are you calling Keith Lockhart gay?

Next you'll be impugning the manhood of Walt Weiss and Wally Joyner.

Svetlanov is one of my guilty pleasures - quite a random conductor to pick outta the blue though!

Well...the Lasorda/Svelte connection and all.

Maybe someone will fling a cello at Tommy, and he can fall over backwards with his feet in the air. It never gets old seeing that highlig...zzzzzzzzzzz.

They should have the Philly Phanatic come on as a surprise guest and smash Tommy's baton.

Anybody else think it'd be great if the tuba player launched into "Baby Elephant Walk" when Lasorda stepped on stage?

I never tire of the "Tommy Lasorda: Fire Engine-Sized Buffoon" jokes.

When he took that header at the All-Star game, it looked like he was wearing a Dodgers pup tent with a hole cut in the top for his head.

"What the f*** do you my think my opinion of Copland's composition is? How can you ask me that at a time like this? He wrote Fanfare for the Common Man and you ask me my f****** opinion of Copland's composition?"
