MLB: Wang to have season-ending surgery

Ouch, babe.

Chien-Ming Wang will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder capsule on Wednesday under the care of Dr. James Andrews and will miss the remainder of the 2009 season.

The Yankees hurler had another MRI examination performed on Monday in Birmingham, Ala., meeting with Andrews to discuss the results and the upcoming procedure on Tuesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the team has no timeframe on how long Wang will need to recover, but it will learn more after the surgery is complete.

“It’s a tough loss for us,” Girardi said after the Yankees’ 6-2 loss to the Rays. “I feel for him, because he’s been through a lot in the last 14 or 15 months, with the [right] foot injury and now this. Hopefully, this will be the end of the surgeries for him, and he will have the rest of his career to be healthy.”

The Yankees can non-tender him and sign him to a contract afterwords right? Can't imagine there's any way they'd offer him arbitration since they'd have to give him at least $4M.

looks like the Yankees hopes of J.B Cox relieving Wang is now over. I guess we can look forward to Jesus Montero catching Ryan Pope.

I think the Reds should pursue him. Their pitching coach, Dick Pole, can do lots of things with Wang.

This makes me sad. The Wanger is definitely one of my favorite players. I hope the Yankees do the right thing by him and at least offer him a living wage while he rehabs, even if its doubtful he ever is effective again.

My guess is the Yankees fill that back of the rotation need with Pettitte's money in the offseason. IPK, Aceves, McAllister, etc. are possibilities as well, but even so the Yankees will need some depth.
