MLB: White Sox Floyd barely misses no-no

By a whisker, if you will.

Gavin Floyd lost his bid for the 17th no-hitter in franchise history during the White Sox 7-1 victory over the Twins on Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field, when Joe Mauer lined a one-out double to left-center in the ninth, just out of Nick Swisher’s reach. It would have been the team’s first no-hitter since Mark Buehrle did the job against Texas on April 18, 2007.

On April 12, Floyd worked 7 1/3 innings against Detroit without giving up a hit before Edgar Renteria’s single to center. On Tuesday, Mike Lamb flied out to center fielder Nick Swisher on the first pitch of the eighth and Adam Everett flied out to Swisher on a 2-2 pitch for the second out. Carlos Gomez hit a broken-bat grounder to shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who threw him out at first to carry the no-hitter into the ninth.

not bad for a franchise without a Nolan Ryan no no. I think Houston leads the non-original 16 with 10 all-time no-nos. Not bad for, what, 56 years. Don't the Dodgers lead all-time w/20?

They had Buehrle. They had Joe Cowley throw the worst pitched no-hitter of all-time. They had a perfect game back in the 1920s. I think Ray Schalk atone point had the record most no-hitters personally caught.

ChiSox no-hitters in the retrosheet era.

In the post-game press conference for Cowley's game, he said he was just happy to get out of the sixth inning. Not many no-hitters have that comment made about them.

Cowley's looked pretty bad, but Blue Moon Odom with 11 walks? That's worse than Burnett's. I find it amazing that Odom managed to walk 11, give up a run, and have that run be unearned. Talk about scattering the walks...

Blue Moon only threw five innings that night (with 9 walks). His relief pitcher allowed no hits (with 2 more walks) in the last four frames.

Odom was worse, but Cowley was more impressive because he kept it up the entire game. I doubt Moon could have.

Floyd's got 18 walks and 19 strikeouts so far this year, and a history of home run problems. I'm extremely unconvinced. He's got a .190 hits per balls in play this year and a .289 for his career _including_ that .190.

Let's wait and see. He still has a career ERA of 5.61.

Poor Floyd. If the Pale Hose had a real center fielder playing instead of Swisher, he might have actually gotten the no-no.

You can be excused, as I clearly recall Odom saying after the game, "Man, who'd've thought I'd pitch a no-hitter at my age?" Well, dude, you didn't, not really.

Hee hee, and 3,367 in attendance for Odom's late July game. Man, were those Oakland fans spoiled.

It was, I think, Odom's last start in the majors.
