MLB: Yanks land Wood to help bridge gap to Mo

Wood bridges never last (cue Colonel Bogey March).

The Yankees made one final move to upgrade their bullpen before Saturday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline, acquiring right-hander Kerry Wood from the Indians for a player to be named or cash considerations, according to a report by the New York Post’s Joel Sherman. The deal is pending the Commissioner’s approval.

Wood, 33, could help the Yankees secure their setup bridge to closer Mariano Rivera, especially now that Joba Chamberlain has lost his firm stranglehold on the eighth-inning duties. The Yankees have also been offering higher-priority innings to Dave Robertson of late.

Wood was activated by the Indians on Saturday from the disabled list after battling a blister issue, and he is 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA in 23 appearances for Cleveland in 2010. The veteran has spent 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, with all but two coming in the uniform of the Cubs.

Yankees paying $1.5 million of Wood's salary for a guy who can't stay healthy and can't get people out when he is. I swear George must have put it in his will ordering Cashman to make a senseless trade in his memory.

There's a better than 50-50 chance that he's superior to Chan Ho Park. The money is neither here nor there.

I hope this doesn't mean Albaladejo is buried for the rest of the season, I want to see if his improvement is for real and if he can help the team in the future.

After his first few outing Wood's been OK, better than CHoP. He's fine as your 4th or 5th RP.

The question is can he get on the field.

I think he'll replace Moseley, Gaudin or Mitre once Pettitte is back. They're carrying extra long men b/c of the questionable 5th starter.

Absolutely no need for more than one of those guys long-term.

I don't see Wood as being a NY guy. He'll crack. The question is whether it is physical or psychological.

But can't you also build bridges out of stone?

Kerry Wood is as hard as mahogany, that's why he's in such exquisite oggany.

He can raise welts, like nobody else.

If you want a good bridge, nothing beats a nice earth-filled Roman arch.

Wood can provide this kind of bridge:

[9] The only Stone pitching right now is Brad Stone. Try getting him off the Marlins.

Cano's homer was an absolute shot. And then I saw Carlos Gonzalez's walk-off. Wow.

Wood and Joba seem broadly similar as pitchers right now.

gee i wonder why they didn't just promote mark melancon for the 8th inning instead of trading him away

ed wade sez he's JUST like brad lidge 2004

i don't think so - he's like 2" shorter

I think you're too down on Melancon. He's pitched poorly this year, but looked fairly promising prior to that. The Astros could well straighten him out and in three or four years trade him to a contender for the next Michael Bourn, who will help them continue at their accustomed level of success.
