MLB.com: Brewers closing in on deal for Wolf

Officially, the Brewers downplayed their contact with free agent left-hander Randy Wolf on Day 1 of the Winter Meetings. Unofficially, the sides appeared close to a deal.

The Brewers emerged Monday as the leading candidate for Wolf, a 33-year-old coming off a career year whose appeal was heightened last week when the Dodgers declined to extend him an arbitration offer. Because of that move, Wolf, despite being a Type A free agent, would not cost Milwaukee a Draft pick. That’s key for a team trying to build a winner today but also trying to sustain some long-term success.

A Brewers official late Monday night downplayed reports that the Brewers’ signing of Wolf to a three-year deal was “imminent,” but those reports persisted nonetheless. AOL Fanhouse first reported that the Brewers were close to signing Wolf and it was later confirmed by SI.com and the New York Post.

MIL Journal-Sentinel blog:
Melvin said he has a "narrow focus" on the group of starting pitchers. He still won't say he has an offer into left-hander Randy Wolf, but we all know he does for about $30 million over three years. Wolf's agent, Arn Tellem, is believed to be shopping that offer around to see if anybody will top it, which is doubtful. Tellem also reveals nothing about negotiations and would only tell me that the process is "ongoing."
...
Melvin wouldn't confirm that the Brewers talked with the Mets about a swap of rightfielder Corey Hart for right-hander John Maine. He did say, "As of right now we don't have anything ongoing with teams."

If the Mets didn't already have Francoeur, I'd make the Maine-Hart trade.

How about Maine, Luis Castillo, cash for Rickie Weeks?

You hate the Brewers that much?

That trade sounds like a dice roll for everyone involved. Dice rolled off a cliff, but what the heck. Honestly, I think we should hold onto Maine one more year. It's not like we're going to get anyone that great for him anyhow.

First, I thought Weeks was a year away from free agency and he might not be. I also thought he was still bad defensively and he might not be. So yeah, that's probably lopsided. That said, Weeks is coming off a wrist injury and those are tough to predict.

It appears the Mets inquired about Hart, according to Melvin. Given that Minaya has been asking around about other OFers such as Juan Rivera, that seems perfectly plausible.

Melvin said that, as of Tuesday evening, he was not engaged in any active trade talks. But he did confirm that Mets officials had at least approached some of their Brewers counterparts about right fielder Corey Hart.

I guess they view Pagan as either a bench player or trade bait.

There is absolutely no reason to think that Corey Hart is going to be better than Angel Pagan. WTF?

(Please note, that's actually conceding that there's no reason to think that Angel Pagan is necessarily going to reproduce a 121 OPS+.)
