MLB.com: [Cliff] Lee wins No. 19 for Tribe’s ninth straight

Rather, the history Tuesday night belonged, once again, to left-hander Cliff Lee, who was backed up by another big offensive performance from his teammates and cruised to his 19th win in a 10-4 victory over the Tigers at Comerica Park.

According to Stats Inc., Lee is just the eighth pitcher since 1920 to start out a season at 19-2 or better. The others were Lefty Grove (19-2 in 1931), Roe Preacher (19-2 in 1951), Whitey Ford (19-2 in 1961), Gaylord Perry (19-2 in 1966), Ron Guidry (19-2 in 1978), Greg Maddux (19-2 in 1995) and Roger Clemens (20-1 in 2001).
...
The Indians won their ninth straight game. It’s their first nine-game winning streak since June of 2005.

He means Preacher Roe.

And for a minute, I thought it was so cool someone named his kid after fish eggs.

I kind of like the idea of an itinerant Roe Preacher, moving from town to town extolling the virtues of fish eggs and winning baseball games. Seems like he'd be more successful in the Japanese leagues, though.

As for Lee, I'm still flabbergasted by how good he's been. I'm a little disappointed to learn that Wedge is considering a six-man rotation down the stretch. That would pretty much eliminate any (small) chance Cliff has to win 25 games.

I'm sure I could look this up, but I'm too lazy. Who was the last pitcher to win 20 games by September 1? Is it Bob Welch 1990?

In 1994, Smoltz won his 20th on 16Aug. He'd go 4-2 with two NDs the rest of the way (4-3 Braves victory and a 2-1 Braves loss) to finish at 24-8.

He started that season with a clunker of a loss (6 ER in 6.1 IP) before rattling off 14 consecutive wins over a 15 game stretch. During that time, he had a 1.91 ERA with a 12-21 K/BB ratio.

Nice.

Not sure if anyone has won #20 in August since.

Are you sure? Perry Gaylord sounds right.

By the way Preacher achieved some notoriety after he retired by teaching the spitball.

..though as I recall, as with Perry word is Roe honored that worthy pitch more in the breach than the execution. There was some ump's memoir once to the effect, anyhow.

It's been done.

Gaylord and the Preacher sounds like a Burt Reynolds movie?

Apparently I shouldn't have traded him in May for Alex Freaking Gordon. Oh well.
