MLB.com: Cubs beat Cards, clinch NL Central

The Cubs can’t make up for 100 years without a world championship just by winning the National League Central, but it’s a start.

Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs and Ted Lilly executed a perfect suicide squeeze to lead the Cubs to a 5-4 victory Saturday over the St. Louis Cardinals and clinch the division for the second consecutive year.

Wonder if Dempster actually goes tomorrow. All the mop-up guys have pitched the past couple games, so they can't really go out and throw 5 innings.

I guess Dempster goes with no regulars in the field.

Unfotunately for you the Mets series isn't the last series. Zambrano and Harden will both probably pitch in the Mets series and I doubt too many hitters will get significant rest. Possibly Soto but that is about it.
Though at this point the Cubs should have a full 40 man roster up and playing. Playing away games so you don't have to worry about the cramped quarters.

So, with their remaining games against the Mets and brewers, they have some small control over who they play in the first round. If they prefer the Dodgers, they can tank against the Brewers.

Congratulations to the Cubs. I fully expect to see the Hangover Back-ups at tomorrow's game, yet still have it be a gloriously good time.

And hell, the clinch today gives me a better chance of seeing my Cardinals win tomorrow.

I was blacked out from mlb.tv today and was only able to listen to bits and pieces, but caught the clinch in the car. Nice to pull this off with eight or nine remaining.

I have a good friend that is a life long Mets fan, and it struck when reading an NYT article today that the Yankees are going to preserve the diamond portion of the ballpark, whereas Shea is going to become a parking lot, my friend is going to lose his life long ballpark. I don't wish that on anyone, even a Mets fan.

great game today, when that final out was in the air i was yelling its over its over. the stadium was rocking but i think it could have been much louder, and i continue my streak of never seeing the cubs lose in a game i attend

I dunno, the only playoff game I've ever been to was Game 3 in 1998, and I don't remember it being as loud then as it was yesterday. (Granted, there was an overwhelming sense in the air that we were going to lose that game.) The Soriano hit/error, the two-out pitches in both the 8th and 9th, Marmol's exit after the 8th, Woody's entrance in the 9th, and then the end: all of those qualify as the loudest I've ever heard the park. But maybe you're right and the fans were just saving some for the playoffs. :)
